Sorry, I forgot to reply. Yeah, 99% of issues were from having the 5th gear collar on backwards. Since it was knackering up the splines, we had to file off the little metal ridges so it could slide over the inner gear. After that, putting it in 4th gear while sliding the case on took care of the rest of the problems.

After about 600 miles of driving, it still works. 5th is a bit hard to engage, but I'm hoping this weekend when I do the tranny flush and dump in the Mobil 1 things get smooth as butta.

Just a follow up, heard some disparaging things about Mobil 1 ATF so I used some Valvoline Max Life instead, worked great and tranny has been good for about 2000 miles now.

The only thing I worry about is the balancing. Other than that it looks like a pretty spiffy idea.

I would say it's a spiffy idea, all because I was the first one to actually do this to a SHO differential lightyears ago! :)

Just wanted to confirm on this post though, even without a balance there's been no problems or failures for years of milage between my two SHO's. I have around 50k on one and 35k on another, all after the reinforcement. Power is not stock either... :thumb:

Philthy, it would be recommended to weld the brackets to the pins, as you have mentioned. Without, the shafts are still prone to twist and snap the roll pins holding them, potentially creating loose debris within the tranny case. ;)

Philthy I opened up mine last month and I had same issue as you , found out it was the same thing , 5th gearset (the one with inside teeths and the one with outside teeths) these are supposed to slide perfectly (when the 3 pins/spring are out) in one another , but mine was jamming when trying to do it manually. The teeths looked nice , but something was blocking.

Anywho , I replaced 5th and now it's A-OK.

Philthy, in your post 36 above pic - HOW did you get the outside of that trans case so clean? Did you media blast it?

It was super easy to do. I just searched the forum for a picture of a transmission case and chose that one. It wasn't mine. :)

It looks like it was a normal case that got scrubbed up and then spray painted silver. However, if I ever get to build a garage/shop/man cave the way I want it, I am going to put in a dishwasher. Let the scrubbing bubble do all the work for me.
