Hi All,

I've been speaking with Rick over at Livernois (seems like a great guy - very informative!) regarding their SHO tune which I am VERY interested in. Being in Canada, I have some worries regarding the use of a tune in very cold weather. In my city (Edmonton) we can sometimes get weather as cold as -35 degrees celsius in the winter time.
My car is always parked outside at work and at home, so I asked Rick what would happen with the tune.
He mentioned that the computer will automatically compensate for weather conditions and that he is also willing to work with me to maybe use a more mild tune for the winter weather.
This all sounds great, however I'm wondering if there are any other forum members out there who have been using a tune in extremely harsh weather conditions? (particularly cold) And if so, have they noticed any troubles or have any input for me??
Thanks in advance to anyone who responds :thankyou:

With Rick being from Detroit, would guess he has more understanding of cold temp issues than most tuners. I would guess you want to make sure the engine is fully warmed up before pushing it much. Of course you can always go back to Stock when you know the temps are going to go way down. Downloading is quick, it is the uploading of the Stock Tune that takes around 5-6 min. Interestingly the time frame is similar when uploading an LS-2 tune file on G8's.

Keep us informed, as I will be driving back to IA at Christmas, and it has been down to -30 F. here in Dec.

Since winter is almost upon us here in Canada, I think that I may wait on the tune until spring. My reasoning is that I'm like a kid getting a Christmas present, I want to open and play with it right away!!! I don't want to install a tune and then NOT use it for the next 4-5 months (yes that's how long our winters are here.....)
Oh well, no tune for me until next year I guess

It is very easy using the SCT Tuner, to install and un-install custom tune, replacing with stock tune. Takes 6 or 7 total min.

If you get your tune now, you can always use it when the weather is good! I'm sure there won't be any damage done with the most radical tune installed in the winter, but your engine might might be slightly affected and your mileage might suffer. It would also give you a reference to work with Rick on getting the best tune for winter.

Am I missing something here? A tune should run in any temperature and cooler temps the better. Does cold air create a problem with our cars? I may be out of line, but I don't recall different tunes for different climates. Altitudes yes, but not temps.

Temp matters much like pressure lower temp means denser air. Low temp and high pressure means REALLY dense air.

It probably isn't significant enough to matter but it is early in teh lifecycle of the tunes, and the EcoBoost platform isn't exactly your $3K throwaway rusty Gen III for many years to come. Likewise I don't see why anyone needs a performance tune when I would be running around on snows anyway.

I guess that I'm being a bit of a worry-wart. It's just that the SHO is my daily driver and currently my only car. I'm still scared about the effects of a tune. By waiting until spring, not only will I save my money on something that I can't use during the winter months, but I may also get some good information from those using a tune during not only the winter, but for another 6 months of overall experience with the tune.

That's great Mike! I would appreciate any of your experience with the tune. I know that it can get fairly cold in Michigan. Although your humidity is much higher than us out here in Western Canada. Since I'm in the middle of the prairies, it's a very "dry" cold......

I'll be driving my Stage 3 Livernois tune all winter. If you want it's really easy to flash back to stock if you're concerned about it. I'm currently testing my stage 4 tune and as soon as I get some 100 octane I'll be trying out the stage 5 tune  Cant let beefcakes record stand the whole year!

Stage 4 was kinda just a name.....I've been driving it daily for the last couple weeks. I let everyone know the particulars of both tunes after tomorrows test at the track.

They still got T&Ts going on at Milan this late in the season? I might have to stop out there once more before the snow starts flying.

Yeah T&T goes thru mid November as long as the weather holds out I believe. Not gonna make it out today as planned. It's a little windy and I want to do some more datalogging before running the new tune at the strip. I've been running a little more aggressive tune for the last couple weeks without issue. I'll probably still drop back to the Livernois Stage 3 tune for the winter. I don't expect any issues. Dan stays pretty safe with his programming and still make great power.

Sorry for the late reply in the thread, I know we have been talking through email. Like others have said, you could always flash back to stock if needed for the winter months.

My daily driver is a turbo Cobalt SS and with our custom tune, it makes 20 lbs. of boost and I drive it that way all winter. In extreme cold weather, it will make 22-23 lbs. I drive all of my cars extremely hard and I just make sure that it's fully warm before beating on it in the cold weather. In all of the Cobalts we've done here, I've only seen one break and it was during the winter months. The block cracked and I found that hard to believe, because the block can take a ton of power. I found that the kid that owned it would start it and instantly beat the life out of it.

Darrell, I can't wait to see what your car runs at the track!
