lining up timing marks

Im getting ready to put everything back together after doing my waterpump and I have a question about the timings marks.

I remember lining both marks up on the cams with the timing belt and then removing the belt. Now that I'm getting ready to install it i noticed the notches aren't lined up anymore. I'm not sure how this happened?

So whats the best way to line everything back up again? should I turn both cam pulleys and the crank pulley by hand or should i put the belt back on and spin it?

Turn the cams and crank by hand. I use a strap wrench to turn the cam gears.

You will notice that 1 cam gear will stay lined up with the timing mark. The second cam gear will be more difficult because the cams will be on the nose. or have the valves open.

Yse a strap wrench or a pair of gloves. You wil loose some skin if you dont.

some times the cams will slip forward or back because of the valve springs. line them back up with a strap wrench.i so pose you could line them up by hand, but it takes some strength. you'll also need to line the crank gear up. theirs a dot on the gear and a notch on the oil pump. line them up as best as you can.

So if I turn each cam gear to 12 and the crank to ~5 i can put the belt on?

pretty much. oh and dont worry too much about getting the timing off. the sho motor is NON interference motor (unless your cammed).

The SHO may have been designed as a non-interference engine, but as I have discovered the hard way, there are no guarantees when the carbon builds up on the piston crowns....

Use a strap wrench to turn the cam sprockets. They can be had for a few bucks (~$3) at Harbor Freight.

The pulley index marks and lines on the belt should appear as in the pictures in this topic when first installed. Once you have turned the crank the first revolution, they will no longer line up.

i saw those at harbor freight but didnt think the rubber would work. I ended up doing it with my hands.

If I put my accessory belt on too tight will it smoke?
