I am in the process of installing a rod shifter :thumb:
I was reminded of a tranny fluid leak. It is coming from the shaft with the rubber boot/ clevis bolt which connects to the shifter. Can I replace THAT seal w/out disassembling the transmission?
If so, any advice?

yes it can be replaced externally. Autozone carries the part, I believe it is the "input shift shaft seal", or something to that effect. You'll be able to identify it quite easily, its just a round little thing. You may have to lightly tap with a hammer to get it seated correctly, just be careful not to damage it.

BTW- Did you figure out why it was running poorly?

yes, I was missing an idler pulley on the blower bracket. Installed the pulley with a new gatorback and now I am good to go :thumb:

Thanks for the info.
What about the rubber boot... it feels like it is connected to the seal...???
Will I lose lots of tranny fluid when I remove it? (remove it by starting a screw into the seal and pulling on it?)

The seal isn't flush with the tranny case; the accordion boot just slips over a lip that is part of the seal. Get the replacement and you'll understand. I wouldn't expect fluid to come pouring out when you remove it, but please let us know how it goes. I replaced mine last winter, and the new seal is apparently leaking.

The rubber boot should just pull off. You shouldnt lose any fluid, at least I didnt, it seems like it should just pour out once the seal is gone, but it didnt. I forget how I removed the seal now but I didnt use a screw, I believe I used a flat head screwdriver and just pried it out (but be careful). It should be pretty self explanitory when your under there.

I was wondering...
I went to a couple stores:
looking under input shift shaft seal, they wanted to know if it was the Mazda tranny or the mtxIII... they said it makes a difference

I used an open needle-nose plyer around/behind the ****** to pry it out. It came out with virtually no effort. As said earlier, you will understand when you see the new part.

Good luck.

got the part.
Thanks!
I can't get it to fully seat though! In the process I AM butchering it :squint:
WHats the deal?
I am using a piece of pvc pipe that fits over the tranny shifter and rests on the seal... tapping it with a hammer. It will let one side seat (cockeyed), but I can't get it to seat as a whole.
Any suggestions?

Same thing happened with my first seal.... Use a common screwdriver and hammer and tap evenly until seated.

I believe that's how I also installed mine. Or you could try putting a cap on the pipe and hitting it square in the center. Or put a piece of wood over the end of it and hit it in the center.

It's much easier to replace with the transmission out too... :D

thanks everyone.
I finally BEAT it in with a flathead screwdriver. No wonder they CAN be prone to leak, as someone said earlier... you have to butcher it to get it in! :smash:
