Only SHOs in Gen3 Taurus read their speed from the ABS. Other trims with a 3.0L (G, GL, LX, SE) all had a speed sensor. And thinking about it, it will be a good way to recognize a SHO trans from a SLO one by simple visual check up (as I'm sure that mine doesn't have this). Maybe some veterans here can have others trick to make the difference ?

How I learned on Taurus VSS :
I had to replace the one on my 98 SLO after a tramission shop didn't saw it when they lowered the trans from the car to rebuilt it. It stay plugged and was badly damaged after this but the guy (probably not so proud) didn't mention it after the repair and replug it as is. After a short time on the return from the trans shop, my speedo simply stopped to work, on highway (very funny). I can also said that if it stop to work, you will also lost the VAPS (variable assistance of power steering) which is a little freaking on highway... (as you don't have any resistance in the driving wheel at high speed).

The SHO speedo problem wasn't for 97 IIRC ?

Boy, going back in the memory archives! I thought that it was only 98, as Ford changed "something" in the wiring that put the ABS sensor as the caboose on that particular circuit.

I recall hearing about it when I bought my 99, and tested it to make sure it wasn't an issue. It wasn't!

A speed sensor socket ? Similar to the speed sensor of the on AX4S on a V6 single cam but a bit different. The sensor on the AX4S is almost under the aluminium sheild...

Can your car have herited of a AX4N of a V6 duratech sooner in his life ? Many mechanics and part softwares doesn't make the difference between SHO AX4N and AX4N for Duratech...

What is the reason of trans change ?

I replaced the trans after something broke inside and i lost forward and reverse.

It was a very good trans stood up to lots of abuse for years. I always wonder if the trans had work done to it because it always shifted fast and strong ( loved the way it shifted). So somebody could put in a duratec ax4n and it would work? My new trans doesn't have that shield.

I guess i could unplug the sensor and see if any gears are there. Should be no gears there to drive the sensor if its a true sho trans i think.

As I understand it, yes you can switch physically the 2 AX4N but one is internally weaker.

Don't remember if my trans have this heat sheild though.

Which sensor are you talking ? If it's the one on the trans, you normally have no wiring going to it... Are you saying that your new trans have this plug too ?

Ron : I don't want to contradicting you, but I rode almost all the content on V8SHO.com site in 2015-2016 when I bought mine (so it can be fresher in my head than yours). ;) But you're a veteran and I'm not and you probably have a lot more driving/repairs/bleeding? experience than me.

Yes im referring to the vss sensor, my understanding is no v8 sho should have one it should be capped off like the trans i just put in the car. With my old trans having a vss im thinking it was definitely a duratec ax4n.

My o ring is still soft and has no tears. Im not gonna replace it. Since it didn't have any bolts im sure it probably was why it was leaking. I don't think it should be hard to find a new gasket based on how it looks.

OK - I'm cracking up laughing at the 'no bolts' thing. How the heck did THAT happen?

Anyhow. You mention a gasket again. Just making sure everyone understands - there is NO gasket at that elbow. It is just the O ring between the elbow and the head.

And a couple bolts. I think they are M5 with a 10mm head.

Get bolts it will work fine. If you want a patch job, you could get some black gasket maker hold/clampcit down and let it cure. That would hold for a while, but wouldn't go long without the bolts.

No bolts !? In french we say : "You were lucky in your misfortune !"

For the bolts, don't know at what is refering to M5 ? But checking the plan on 1st page and holes on photos, there is a chance that the IAC bolts can fit. Not very hard to try (and not very hard to find on a scrapped SLO if it fits).

Ok... I googled the part # and these bolts are made by Yamaha ! And easy to find on the net. I think you were lucky two times...

I can vouch for my 98 having the speedo issue; seemed to top out @+/- 110 (I got up there only two or three times).
I never did read about the issue being 100% tied to any particular root cause, but the ABS involvement was thrown around in discussion quite a bit.

Mine drops out someplace just about 105. I was also told it was an ABS involvement issue but no one I have ever talked to about it could suggest a fix.

I think I ran across that also, but was told that when tried it did not work. Actually, thinking back on it (it was a long time ago now), I am pretty sure it was one of the trustworthy mechanics at the Ford dealership that I had exceptional service at that told me that. I trusted him on it and let the concern about it drop. As with most of us, I seldom take it to the sort of speeds where it matters. Not these days, anyway. If I want to go that fast, I use the 911 at the road course track.

My memory seems to recall something from the mists of time posted by Mr. Anonymous (Chris Archer) about an undersized wire in the gauge cluster area.
Added a second conductor or something like that and the speedo was good afterwards.

That was a LONG time ago....I could be mis-remembering.
