Kind of a basic audio question.

I got a basic audio question. If i were to buy a new pioneer head unit, nothin special, but just something like 25wattsx4, could i hook a subwoofer up to it without having an amp for the sub? Because it is possible to put a good subwoofer, although a small one, in the box for the JBL system woofer right? I only have the premium system, but i'm guessing that i could just find a woofer box from a JBL system car, and bolt it in place in my car right? This is just an idea, but tell me what ya think.

a headunit will not power a sub...BUT, i'm pretty sure that if you get the subwoofer, box, and the two amps that come with the JBL setup, you can swap all those components into the car.

It's not too hard, i did it on my 95 that came stock with the premium sound. All the connectors should already be in the trunk.

I dont know how cheap you can get these items..someone on here may have them. Still a helluva lot cheaper than buying a new amp, sub, box, and wiring.

Ok heres another quick question. If i get a head unit that puts out 20 wattsx4 rms, and keep everything routed through the 20watt premium sound amp, will i be pushing 40watts rms at my speakers, or just overpowering/ overheating my amp? Thanks

I don't think you will get 40watts to the speakers but I could be wrong. I am actually impressed with how well the factory system does. Mine is all stock except for a 10" infinity sub which actually sounds pretty good for such a wimpy amp.

i think if you use an aftermarket headunit, in conjunction with the "premium sound", you run a higher risk of blowing out the factory speakers...but i'm not sure of that..

If i were you, i'd forgo the subwoofer right now, upgrade your speakers to some quality peices (i really liked how my infinity reference speakers sounded with the "premium sound" amp still connected to them). It provided sound quality that was on par with the stock JBL system. Maybe even a little clearer.

Ya i think i might check out these new panasonic 5x7/6x8's. They have the best specs, and they're about 50 bucks a pair. Curcit City has them too so i might head up there and give em a listen. I agree that the stock premium sound definetly sounds good, but i bet upgrading from 1992 tech to 2005 tech will make it sound even better.

If you try running out of one amp into another, all you'll do is overload the second amp's input. You'll get nothing but distortion, and possibly fry the input of the second amp. Bypass the amp when running a powered head unit, or run the RCA outs to the inputs of the factory amp. Or better yet rewire the whole audio system with real amps.

just save up for some good speakers and amp to power them... them work on getting your sub and amp to power it.

I have a Pioneer headunit, still using the factory JBL amp. Every speaker has been replaced also. I disconnected the sub amp, and its sitting somewhere now. Dont know where. I got 2 10" inch subs running off a alphasonik amp. Sounds good. You can see more of it at my cardomain page.

most am headunits say 50Wx4 but they RMS 16-22W each channel. 50W per channel is just the max/peak
