The keyless entry pad on my 92 SHO isn't working m. I can press it and the interior lights come on, but when I put in the code. Nothing unlocks. I guess the pad is bad? Heh.. that rhymes. Anyway... do I simply replace the pad or could it be something else preventing it from working?

The way I test them is to push one of the buttons and check to see if the interior lights come on. Then, let that time out so the lights go off again. Press the second key and check if the lights come on. Repeat until you have checked all 5 of the keys.

My guess is you will find that one of them is not making contact. If so, replace the keypad.

I seem to remember there is a way to insert a second code in the unit. If there is, you could construct a code using the still active buttons.

Do the last 2 buttons still perform their function? If not, one of them could be the bad button.

Are you sure you are using the correct code, is the sticker still on the box in the trunk?

I can remember a long ago post that showed how a series of 5 resistors in the box determined the code, and you can figure out the code that way.

a challenge with what Sperold posted above:
You need to enter the current code first in order to add a code, so if the buttons needed for the factory code don't work, you cannot add a code.
Also, the added codes will go away when the battery is disconnected, so you would have to re-enter it whenever that might occur.

I suppose its possible that the box is bad, but I have yet to see that. However, any similar generation Taurus / Sable from the jy with keyless has a box that could be substituted, so if its easier to get a different box from the jy with a code that still works, that would be another option. (The box is in the trunk on the driver's side.)

I still have the original card with the master code on it in the car manual. The previous owner kept everything including an extensive maintenance log dating all the way back to 92 along with some SHO registry books and other information. I can drop pics of it.

When the last 2 buttons on the number pad are pressed at the same time, does it lock the doors?

I think it is time you looked on the box in the trunk to determine if it is the same as your owner card. My guess is the box has been changed and you have a new code. The code is often on a sticker on the box, and can be read while it is still in position.

so if each button turns on the lights, then you have confirmed that each button is okay, so it is something other than the keypad.

Putting the code in on the owners card and pressing the last two buttons does indeed lock the car doors. which one was it to open them? I though it was the 3/4 button.

EDIT: Okay pushing the two last buttons even without the code from the owners card I have will lock the doors. I am getting the feeling that card is the wrong code or it has since been changed.

EDIT 2:Okay I found the code. Apparently it was different from the one in the book.

and when you get it all worked out, carefully sand off paint and polish like you do a headlight and you get this.. polished aluminum.

Okay so I got a new keypad and now I am having some issues. When I first plugged it in the keypad lights lit up but button 1/2 didn't work. Unplugged it then plugged it back in. Now all the keypad buttons work but the keypad lights won't come on.

Hey Bryan, how clean is the replacement and where'd ya get it--cause contacts do seem to be one category of sho...let's call them delicates..deficits that sho up after a number of years. I'm about 20% knowledgeable with any facts, but I've experienced some problems with contacts. The window motors are notorious.
