Speedo cable could likely be unplugged. Open hood, look between firewall and trans/engine junction. There should be a black or grey cable curving down toward the ground. Make sure it is plugged into the trans.

I also have seen one where the speedo drive thing was so filled with crud that it would not turn and had stripped the teeth off the driven gear. I would unplug the cable at the trans and confirm that the cable rotates freely and the speedo responds to that rotation. Then I would confirm that the piece in the top of the trans will turn as the wheels turn. That investigation should lead you to the real issue.

I recently just fought this, do you know how the speedo stop working? all at once or slowly?
My gear inside the transmission some how split into two pieces. Was a total pain to diagnosis.

thanks guys. According to the fellow i bought it from it never worked after getting the transmission rebuilt. i tested the cable ( both parts) and its spins freely ( very freely) and the speedometer turns too. Sometimes when i am in fourth gear maybe going 50 it will move slightly.

so remove the cable from the trans, jack up one front wheel (with park brake on) and lay up on top of the engine so you can see if the speedo driven shaft turns when the wheel turns. (of course you need an assistant to turn the wheel unless you are very talented with your toes). I am guessing that it does not, and you will need to remove that driven gear asm from the trans to repair/replace.
