I am wondering how custom that job and parts really are.
Exactly why I was curious...it's possible I could have some of it done locally if it was just a matter of having some parts hardened, treated (either shotpeened or cryo), or even machined. I guarentee you over half that 2.5k is labor cost. ****, I could put it together if I had a parts list of stuff that needed to be upgraded. I guess we could find out on our own, but it's nice when someone has done the legwork on something that works and is willing to share the info...jussayin...lol

I am all for doing thing myself, it is definitely more cost effective BUT sometimes one needs to weigh the conundrum of this... If I do this myself, I do NOT have any warranty on this....is warranty going to be needed in this case or will I be ok without it?
if you are paying for a service, every service will have some sort of a warranty on it (unless otherwise stated) ....sometimes that alone is worth the added cost

just my $ .02

Good point. Those costs have shop liability for possible failures built in...very true.

I see a reman sho unit from oemfordpart.com goes for $2661. The R&R labor can vary all over the place if you don't change it yourself.

Realistically, assuming I went over the top with my MKS, I'd probably copart a car in order to part it out and get most of my expenses back. I'd have the engine and trans that I could just take out and build up, and parting out most of the rest and salvaging the shell would probably cut my costs in half, if not pay for most of it.

Also, I've never torn a car down to the ground, so this sounds more appealing to me than it probably is. LOL

Would that shop be willing to part with the info pertaining to what parts were actually upgraded and how? I'm thinking they won't because they'd probably love the $2.5k (which I'm sure includes alot of labor, not just parts) for themselves, but might be worth asking at least.

I'll swing by on monday on my lunch break and talk to the owner again. Who knows, he may be opening to giving a little more detail, I don't think he is worried about money, he has a lot of dragsters/promod/etc in his shop all the time.

Its not as hard as you think, just VERY time consuming.

When I was trying to decide whether or not to put another stock motor in a copart car was the direction I was going to go and part out the rest. Figure I got the "stripping a car down to a tin can" aspect down pretty well.

Jordan, since the auctions have been down for a while now it might very well be a good time to see if the salvage auctions are dealing on price. I work large fleet and we've absolutely slammed the car auctions between St Louis, Ill, and KC. Right now I'm guessing we're sitting on 20+ salvage units on our lot alone waiting to be taken to salvage auctions which are in the same state of affairs as the regular auto auctions. Check Copart and the likes. Ultimately it just depends on what you decide to do. Take a deep breath and take things a day at a time.

Up for discussion... Considering not even doing the CSS closed deck. I've only seen one instance of it being needed thus far and that's on a big single 30+ psi monster. Just rebuilding with upgraded components and staying around the same power levels otherwise would be the goal. I've always pushed for times but frankly other than a ten I didn't really have much more of a goal to push farther. Thoughts?

I guess I should add this would allow me to do other upgraded components easier. So essentially I'd be doing rods, pistons, then instead of the CSS I could do some porting and other upgrades.

I would tend to agree. Would CSS be nice for piece of mind? Absolutely. Necessary? Probably not. I do think the money and time put elsewhere could be more beneficial for overall engine health.

The question is though, once you reach your goal, are you going to want to stop there?

Why is it the current fastest and previous fastest EB sho holders are competing with rebuild threads now? Better yet why am I looking at upgraded turbos and following the other rabbits down the hole when I know how it ends... some one slap some sense into me please.

I'm at the goal basically. I don't have aspirations for huge power
