I'm at the goal basically. I don't have aspirations for huge power

Longevity would be a consideration. Could you get away with just rods/pistons/rebuild probably...

But if you are gonna hammer it the way you did the stock block then who knows how long it would last?

Although given the history you have of saying you are gonna see where it goes, then I suspect if you do stay with the SHO platform, you are gonna keep pushing it.

Would suck to have $15k in performance work done and not be able to go much further cause you decide to skip closing the block....

Todd Weaver is there... you should talk to him. He didn’t close his block and wishes he had..

Although my own advice would be get the trans/PTU/RDU/limitations resolved or a least a bead on who can work it... otherwise it won’t matter what motor you have.

Trans, ptu, rdu is why I have no aspirations for more power. Same reason I ultimately decided gh turbos would suffice over ATP after talking with Matt. Frankly anybody with upgraded turbos on stock motor is on limited time, but given the rest of the drivetrain realistically I'm more than happy with the power but the reason I hadn't driven the car near as much in the last few months was literally the rods screaming. Just feel not doing the CSS and focusing more on making the engine more efficient at lower boost to hit same power levels is the wise way. 18 psi with the same power as 20 sounds delightful to me. Ideally after I build the motor the car is going to be a marvelous street killer and once the wife and I finish out our last 13k in debt it's time for a real project! Originally what I wanted was 550/550 made 536/647 then dialed back the torque.

Something I will say though is I have been having thoughts that the motor hasn't quite been 100% since the last drag strip day, then the ultimately the stuck injectors from bad lpfp filter but that was just a hunch. There were always just some "that doesn't seem normal" aspects that I'd notice. Anyways once I get the motor pulled in a couple weeks we'll see what the internals look like.

So now that I've rambled on. Just don't think I'll be pushing it farther power wise than I have to need it. Todd has always had a pretty advanced set up in comparison so I totally understand his regrets in not doing it.

I don't think close decking the block is necessary honestly. You are not running crazy boost. I think a rod and piston combo would be more then enough.

I think the trans is going to be the weak point. I know there are people working on it, but we shall see where that leads.

People keep saying the PTU is a weak point, just I don't see it. We haven't see a large failure rate due to power. We see fluid failure, which smokes the bearings, then that kills the gears and assembly.

The RDU can only send so much power back so....it is kinda saving itself.

I personally would **** the tq on the launch and make it up on the big end with more HP.

If I were to turn it up can always pull timing and crank up the boost. The turbos have another 2-3 psi in them. When I was full interior with passengers could physically feel the trans clutches slip in 4th. That's why I stripped it post haste.

To save the trans I think you will have too. As you know, the launch puts the most stress on the trans, however down the track the load is less and "easier" on the trans. I think if you can keep the fluid temps under control that would be your best bet. Make it act like an actual turbo car and let her eat and MPH on the big end.

So I’m assuming you’re not planning this rebuild without at least having someone go through the trans right?

So I was talking with my parts guy today and he said the 3.5L SHO Crank has been discontinued. I know the Raptor stuff fits, but does anybody have confirmation a raptor crank would fit without modifications to a crank pulley/ other things? Can get a raptor crank for like <$200

Realistically, assuming I went over the top with my MKS, I'd probably copart a car in order to part it out and get most of my expenses back. I'd have the engine and trans that I could just take out and build up, and parting out most of the rest and salvaging the shell would probably cut my costs in half, if not pay for most of it.

Also, I've never torn a car down to the ground, so this sounds more appealing to me than it probably is. LOL
You married?

Cuz, she ain't gonna like it, if you are. The mess/clutter of stuff becomes uncontainable.

You have a part number? Did they check the supply chain? I can't believe there are not replacements still out there.
Stronger replacement would be nice though.

Good buddy of mine, just said it was discontinued and he couldn't get it. Didn't prod any further due to me not even having the motor out yet to specifically know if I need it or not.
If anything, you can just check on Tasca or any of those other OEM Ford parts places online to see if they can be ordered. It'll usually say if they are discontinued or unavailable.

Yeh, buuuut ... it's MY m'f'ing garage.

Also. I would ask her, of course. I have broached the subject before, and she was noncommittal.
Right up until the stuff creeps its way out of the garage. And it will.

Unless your garage is YUGE.

I don't want to talk you out of it, I did it with my old car. BUT. Be prepared. Yes, it saves time and money, not having to order every little piece you break while working on other things, and waiting for parts. But, the space it takes up gets larger and larger and larger.

Its good if you're planning to do a major build, like I did. I replaced every nut and bolt, every mechanical piece, etc. Minus a roll cage or tube frame, that car is a silhouette car.
