OK this is what mine it doing. Starts off fine but after 10 min. it stops. A few 15 - 20 seconds later another wipe. I hear a click when the wiper starts and just before it stops. I did the MFS wiggle with no change and usually works longer if I am just using intermittent setting. So do you think wiper control relay or wiper motor? I am fairly convinced it is not the MFS but if you all think different I have a gen (I) I can swap it out with. I also have a sitting gen (I) I could use the control relay or motor if they swap.

thanks

Is it doing this only on continuous, at all the intermittent settings, a few intermittent settings, or both continuous and intermittent settings?

Since you have known working "spare" parts, I tried changing one item at a time. Try the relay first, then the multifunction switch only second (ie. put the old relay back in).

There may be a way to test the wiper motor - projectsho1989 and rangerj are most likely to know how.

I appears to be though out the range. Only yesterday did it happen when I had the car. I had the wipers on high. Changes the settings with not change in function. Turned it off and then back on to a different setting several times going to different settings with no change. Is there any markings on the relay to help find it under the dash?
thanks

It's really not a relay but correctly called an interval governor. It's located under the dash near the center on the LH brace.

I installed the new governor. Ran the wipers for about 5 min and it seem good but sometimes the old one wouldn't have and issue for 10 or more min. Now if I stop the wipers when they are almost down it doesn't park. If I stop them when they are up it parks all the time. I'll update this next time it rains.

Just swapped out my 89 wiper motor. The wiper motor transmission seemed a little sloppy on the 93 compared to the 89. It still doesn't park without some on and off of the MFS. Sent the wife on an errand with instructions to run the wipers to see if they stop. I assume they will.

Cleaned switch. Ran wipers for 5 full minutes without issue. Lets see if they can handle "THE WIFE".

Well she got about 4 min on high until they stopped. 8 min on low and still didn't stop. Any ideas what next? Clean again? I used alcohol and not electrical parts cleaner. I have another MFS but it is for my 89 not the 93. Are they different? Advance auto lists them different.

In looking through my "Dave's Top Ten trouble shooting guide . . . ."

  • 10. Who needs "HI" anyway?

    9. Find excuses to not drive while it's raining, until she forgets.

    8. If it's the wife's car, tell her the parts "on backorder, so don't use High" until you can find another salvage yard MFS.

    7. If it's not the wife's car, ban her from driving it.

    6. Next time it rains, immediately jump in the driver's seat, only use the "NORMAL" (err. LO) setting and comment on how well the wipers are working.

    5. Get the windshield Rain-X'ed, and comment on how you don't even need the wipers since the Rain-X is working so good.

    4. Tell her that "using HI" will wear the Rain-X treatment off faster.

    3. Clean the MFS again (without her knowing), and then tell her she just needs to be more patient next time, to give the repair time to work . . . .

    2. Tell her that since the switch is an electrical device, that the recent intermittent operation is due to recent "excessive" solar activity.

    1. Tell her that the "HI" position is actually a "convenience feature" which allows you to signal oncoming traffic "HI" by flashing your lights, without disrupting wiper operation that can otherwise occur when you pull-back on the turnsignal lever.

Well I changed out the MFS with a new one. Here is a pic of the inside of the old MFS. I hope the copper oxidation is the cause of my problem.

yep. Removed the star screws and opened the two halves. I guess a little electral parts cleaner is in order.

I cleaned all the contacts in the unit including the ones under the white plastic high/low beam selector. As soon as I confirm the new unit is working I will swap them out again and see if the cleaned one will work. I see very little that can go bad in this unit. But the patina will cause resistance. At $44 for a new one on the 90 and above most will find it easier to buy a new one. For those of us that just don't want to spend a dime more than needed take apart with a #10 star and clean.
