ok, so for those who have followed my nightmare, i finally got the thing running, and it runs well. but i'm having some shifting problems.

for those that don't know i pulled my tranny, put in a fidanza, southbend tz clutch, quaife, shimmed the gearset tighter, and shotpeened the gears.

i've bugging beth with this but thought i'd open the floor.

i had an issue with it being funny in 5th and not going into reverse but that was fixed when i realized i left the reverse idler bolt out. it threaded in all the way, normally with no issues.

after i replaced the bolt it still didn't want to shift and i noticed the shifter (rod) was very sloppy, so i replaced it with the rod shifter from my other SHO which is very tight, no play at all. then i would go into reverse but it was difficult.

with the shifter disconnected (note car off) and a drift punch in the shift rod, the tranny shifts very nicely, in to ALL gears, and as long as i'm moving, all the forward gears are BUTTER. once i come to a stop it feels like there is a wall between me and first and after some cussing it'll go, reverse will not go at all anymore. it did for 1 night after i replaced the idler bolt.

given the good shifting with the shifter disconnected it's gotta be the shifter or maybe a clutch/cable/quadrant issue right? i cannot get my quadrant to adjust for the life of me, i've done all the reading. no clicks. either it's broke or i'm doing it wrong.

the shifter that's in there now worked just fine in the sho i took it out of which is my DD. what the **** kind of trick do ya'll think this is playing on me?

You said you can shift the tranny with a drift punch from under the car with it not running. Can you do the same with the rod shift inside the car with it not running? Sounds like you are having the same issue as me. I wonder if it's a Southbend clutch problem...

no i cannot shift into reverse with the car off from inside the cabin. i can hit 5th however.

with a drift punch it goes into EVERY gear fine. sounds like shifter maybe, but the shifter in the car now was in my other sho a day or 2 ago and shifted fine, there is no play in the joints. the crappy shifter that was in the car is in the other sho and still shifts good, in that car. i don't get it...

You mean you can put the shifter in the spot and there is nothing, or you are literally locked out from going where those gears are?

feels like i'm locked out, the shifter will not move far enough to engage reverse. as i described, pushing against a wall. no grinding, just no moving. this does not happen with the drift punch in the tranny, it engages happily.

however swapping shifters with a confirmed good shifter does not solve the problem...
