When the MAF went out in my car, I did the same thing and replaced it with an Autozone part and the code still came up. I had to get an actual Ford part from the dealer to get a working unit merely because the calibration of the Autozone unit wasn't correct for the car. The MAFs are calibrated to the size of the injectors and the air flow of the sensor housing itself. They can't be mixed and matched like aftermarket suppliers do. And that's why I said to be sure to get the correct sensor for your application because even though the housings are the same, the calibrations aren't.
Take the Autozone sensor back and get a refund. If the car idles or runs better with it disconnected, the MAF is malfunctioning and you need to replace it with the correct one.
