So I noticed while driving my MTX on the highway, lets say Im in 4th or 5th doing 45+ mph. If I take it out of gear and put her in neutral the RPMS fall down to 1,000 Rpms everytime. is this norma?.

Not entirely. What RPM does the car idle at while stopped? The idle should not drop that far if the car is moving. As long as it stays a little higher than normal, stopped idle speed, it's normal. If the RPMs drop all the way back to stopped idle speed, then you might need a vehicle speed sensor, located on top of the trans.

Not much in an MTX. Might trip a check engine light, but I'm not sure what the VSS does except detect motion and bump up the idle.

On top of trans, nearest the drivers strut tower, under the wiring harness support that keeps the wires off of the clutch lever.

No. the speedo is mechanical and the tach has nothing to do with vehicle speed. As far as I know, the only purpose for the VSS is to bump the idle speed if the car is moving. I'd like to know if I'm wrong, so I'll be following this thread...at least until I decide I don't care any more...which may be soon!

Good Thread! Have a question on my 91 MTX, when I set my cruise control to a certain speed say for example 75 MPH the car won't do anything until the speed reaches 70 MPH. So if I want to cruise at 75 MPH I have to set it at 80 MPH. Also when I come to a stop the car will idle at 1200 RPM like it was still moving with the tranny in Neutral. Then a couple of seconds after stopping the car will immediately drop its idle as if it just figured out the car is not in motion. Sometimes when it drops its idle the car stalls or will fall to 400 RPM and slowly recover to normal idle. I have tried 2 different IAC's with the same results. Could this be a VSS related issue?

vss sounds okay, trainguy1989, your symptoms are typical of a sticky iac. did you try a new one or another used one?

I am not aware of any way that the iac can mess with the cruise performance. your cruise symptoms are new to me and I'll need to think about that one.

Well my cruise control works but now I have a new problem. After I just fixed the passenger side wheel bearing last week... Now I wake up and come outside this morning and my car is halfway on the sidewalk.. Some ******* smashed into my passenger side overnight , scraped the whole side of my passenger door up and now my front passenger wheel is out of aligntment, the drivers side wheel which is fine is facing straight while the passenger side that was hit is pointing out to the right as if the steering wheel is turned to the right and its pushed up against the front of the wheel well... What scumbags live in this town...

Wow, that sucks hard. Will insurance cover the damages? Sounds like you have a bent/broken tie rod at the very least, plus the cosmetic stuff. The rack itself could have been damaged as well, along with other suspension components in that corner. I'm really sorry to hear that.

I only have the basic insurance that covers bodily injury etc..., I dont think it will pay for this hit and run damage, but Ill definately check into it. Heres what it looks like. The wheels turn ok, I didnt see any power steering leakage. I wont know how bad it is till I take the wheel off

For the wheel to be where it is (pushed forward), the control arm and/or strut rod must be tweaked, either that or the whole subframe shifted, but that's unlikely if the driver's side is still good. Tie rod ends might be OK. Hopefully the subframe is OK as well...

Bummer man. :frown:

Well i popped open the hood and looked at where the strut is bolted in. You can see on the strut tower the bolt is bent..that has the bushing on top of the strut tower underneath that black dome / circle cover. Im not sure if the subframe is out of alignment as i didnt do a thorough inspection. I think the drivers side wheel is bent also because when the ***** hit my car he hit it so hard it pushe d the car over the curb and onto the sidewalk. Im looking at bick $$ to fix this damn thing..
