Start with high NOX and Texas emissions failure.
FORD recommended clean injectors & intakes, replace
MAF sensor, remove EGR valve & clean tube. Did the cleanout only at this time($200). No EGR service. No change in NOX. Texas obliged with waiver & sticker for expense in excess of $100.
A shop used a cleanout for engine & gas tank, no
change in NOX, however while on a recommended run
at 4000-5000 RPM the engine lost RPM & would not
respond to the throttle for several seconds. This
was the start of the problem, which became more erratic & frequent with a check engine light on.
FORD changed the MAF sensor to no avail, they now recommend a new coil pack and fuel pump.
If anyone can help, I'll appreciate it.

Well, the first thing I can do to help is tell you to stay the **** away from Ford dealers. Now then, with that out of the way, pull the codes from the EEC and see what your car is saying is wrong with it. For the NOx, I'd say either O2 sensors need replacing, or you need new cats. Pull the codes and let us know what you come up with.

I feel your NOx pains. The tightening of the emissions requirements in the DFW area have proven to be a problem for some of the older cars that weren't designed to reduce the NOx emissions. My 1991 SHO does not have the EGR system that was installed specifically to lower the combusiton temperatures to reduce the NOx production.

My car has new O2 sensors, new cats (last year), recent (Dec. '02) top and front end 60K, new PCV hoses, new vacuum hoses, a new charcoal purge canister solenoid and I even restored the OEM MAF body and it still is having trouble meeting the low speed NOx limits. After much more than $100, I didn't get any waiver. They didn't even seem to be aware of it at the Firestone Mastercare shop that was doing the testing.

With the CHECK ENGINE light, the EEC (computer) is trying to tell you what the problem is. All you have to do is ask it. Click here to see how to do it.

Thanks to everyone for their replies.

Now my problem is - I'm getting older and it's getting harder to keep up with you young guys in the maintenance department - I need some help that knows their stuff and I can trust. Dealership told me the code was 216 and replaced 2nd coil - it's just a little better. I'm going to replace the sparkplug wires and finish cleaning the oil out of that last one. Then - any advice for someone to help me? I'm in the Dallas area.
