lately i have noticed after starting my 89 and pressing the gas it would hesitate from like 1000 to 2000k rpm. After that got on the highway and pressed gas in 5th going about 65. did the same thing so i decided to drop 3rd to maybe get rid of it. rpms slowly rised still sputtering and it started to **** with a surge of power near red line. dont know what to make of this?

Mine was doing somthing like that and it was a bad ground to the intake. What brand of plugs and wires did you use?

You should check your codes. I was having similar problems with my 89. When I ran the codes, the EEC told me my O2 sensors were indicating lean (causing the car to run rich), and the ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor was out of range (probably also causing the car to run rich). I changed O2's and ECT, and the car ran great.
