Not necessary but beneficial. Buy a few cans of Berrymans B12 carb cleaner or euqivalent and go to town on it! For the remaining gunk in there I have had very good luck with "gasket remover" It breaks all the carbon crap up and basically wipes right off!

To do it right plan on disassembling the intake which you'll need new gaskets, roughly $40-$50 (i cant remember)

i noticed that on the throttle body there is some kind of warning lablel about using cleaners on the intake, does it matter, or will any kind of carb cleaner be good, and what is gasket cleaner??

CLEAN THEM!!!!! :thumb: the gasket set at napa is about $42 and its well worth it to clean those runners and the tanks, about 4-5 cans of berryman b-12 chemtool at ur local wal-mart, and i also recommend getting some flexible 1.5" diameter engine brushes(like $4 for a set), it goes much faster, and they look cleaner when ur done! :salute:

i never really cared about the warning label on the tb, i cleaned the crap outa both of mine, and never had any trouble.

NOT JUST ANY CARB CLEANER WILL WORK! none can work like b-12, ud have to use about 2x as many cans.....gasket cleaner works, but ive never tried on my intakes.

Just bought new intake gaskets from NAPA, paid 32 and change. Check them out. Thats for the complete set, intake manifold gaskets, all the runners, IAB gasket. Might want to invest in a new throttle body gasket as you will probably be taking that apart from the manifold. Think mine was two or three bucks from NAPA also.

Dont kow how long since the car has been serviced, might want to consider plugs and wires, a snap with the manifold off.

Check out the SHO Phoenix Project website for the disassembly instructions, make your self aware of the coolant lines, and vac lines. Its in the uppper 60K part, great pictures too. lost a vac line last time i took mine off, went to the website, and found the source of the vac line, went to my car and found the stupid thing.

Oh, and dont forget to cover the intake holes with shop rags or something.

I know that there is a special coating inside TB's, I don't know if it is an anit-static coating or what, but to my knowledge it is supposed to be there. And you are not supposed to clean it. So says ford, and my dad, I trust the latter of the two.

Gasket Remover I meant, my bad
Wait I did say remover. Its some sort of penetrating spray that removes gaskets. All part stores will (should) have it. It will basically make the carbon soften up and wipe away smoothly. I accidentally found it out and now I use it all the time. It works great!

ohh ok, well will i need a gasket remover?? or will they come off with a small screwdriver...on second thought i will get the remover, screwdrivers have a tendency to screw things up when they are in my hands.

it is a really potent cleaner, to remove gasket that has hardened. Don't clean the inside of the trottlebody unless it needs it I guess, the runners and tanks are different, the TB is a whole other area, clean the IAB valve though, It is a sinch to do, take it off, watch out for the lower bolt, and clean the spring, it gets hella carbon build up in there and doesn't work properly, gets stuck, is you TB okay? I checked the TB on my mustang, it has 187,000 and some change, and it is perfect, no crap what so ever. On a different TB, it was gunk-di-fied, it was nasty!!! Oil, caked oil, and more oil, nasty, in that case I cleaned it out, not much you could do on that note. take the advice above, but just watch the TB, I will try to see what that coating is for.

see where the TB goes into the plenum ", it is the deal that is sideways, to the right, in this picture, of the first rubber gasket on the main tank. It is the Intake Air Bypass, so when you are at idle, this is controlling the airflow, carb cleaner is what I used, oh and an old toothbrush. and you got it!

naw, take it off, there is a couple openings in it, just spray the cleaner, let it sit for a min on the springs to penetrate the carbon, then with tip of toothbrush "gently" clean the spring. watch out for the bottom lil bolt, it wants to fall into never-gunna-find-me-land.

reading sticker off my 65mm TB says "do not clean inside Throttle Body or adjust hard stop screw. Special coating on throttle plate and bore" So I guess you can take that for what it is worth SHOfun 93
