I found a LONG time ago with my 89 that if I put it into 3rd then reverse it would NEVER grind. I have told that to a few other people and it works for them too, so if yours grinds, put it into third, then reverse! Let me know if it works.

You might want to consider reading either the owner's or the service manual.

This is normal behavior for a transmission with an un-synchronized reverse gear.

Ok...well then I have this question:

Why the **** is reverse unsynchronized??? Every other manual tran on the planet has one, every car I've ever owned has been a manual and no problem going into reverse. Why the **** did Ford chince out on this tranny? There is no reason not to have a synchronized reverse gear...

If you read the owners manual, youll notice that it specifies to put the clutch all the way in for about 3 full seconds before going into reverse.
If you do that, then you will prevent the grinding going to reverse.
Personally, sometimes I dont feel like waiting still for 3 full seconds ( :p ) so I do the old... 2 to Reverse, then sometimes that fails so I use 3 to R, or 4 to R, whichever I randomly pick.
Anyways.. hope that helps.
Another quick thing ... the manual also tells you how to adjust your clutch. From what I can remember...you put it in 1st then using your toe, you pull the clutch until you hear a light 'click' I cant remember exactly. but it's in there.

Krazyraven, 5th gear is supposed to have a reverse lockout. If you can shift 5th to reverse then something is broken in your trans.

Actually, many transmissions have reverse unsynchronized. My 1989 Nissan 240sx had an unsynchronized first gear as well. You just had to get used to it. After the first day of driving I never ground it going into first. I've always shifted 1st-Reverse or 2nd-Reverse, no matter what vehicle it is.

No rear gear syncro.
Come to full stop, pop into 1st (for me anyways) to line it up. No grinding.

Sometimes I can't get it into rear at all, so I just roll foward or backward about a foot to line it all up. Anyone else have this problem?

Yes, it happens on occasion to me as well. A foot is a tad extreme. I literally ease out the clutch until the car creeps, then hit reverse.

There is a phenomenon called clutch drag that can be so much of a problem that there is at times just no way it droping into reverse without cramming it, sometimes it won't go in period. Its not so much of a mystery. Some of this problem my be ampified by a sloppy linkage/cable bushing. Clutch drag would be caused by a t/o bearing and or diaphram finger problem. At the same time all forward gears seem ok.
