On 2 occasions the idle,(while the car is in Park) on my 96 SHO surges to about 3000 RPM. It happened to me once and my wife once. I told her to simply turn the car off if it happened again. Any ideas?

There are a slew of documented instances of this occurring listed on
www.v8sho.com .
For example:
High Idle
and
TSB
to name a few.
In a nutshell, there is a historical issue with the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) where it attaches to the wiring loom.
Basically, while your car is exhibiting this problem, pop the hood, find the TPS (it will be on the opposite side of the throttle body from where the throttle cable is attached). If you simply unplug this connector and reconnect it, you should notice that the car will settle back down. Be VERY careful when you do this though to stay clear of the power steering belt and pulleys which are located in close proximity to this location. As a long term solution, I cleaned both the connector and the TPS contacts with electrical contact cleaner.
Good luck!
You mean stay clear of the water pump pulley and belt.
Otherwise, follow wild01ride's instructions and you should be fine.
