ok, I went out and hunted around by braile for about 20 minutes without 'feeling' anything that i could think is the VSS. car is '93 ATX
i did find a cylindrically shaped object with a plastic type heat shield in the general vicinity of where i've gathered that the VSS is supposed to be.

so here's a pic, help me find it please.

the front of engine bay arrow should help orient you. so should that heat sheild which is on (i think) the exhaust manifold. you can also see what is a cylindrical canister attatched to the firewall.

so, SHO gurus, point me in the right direction...it started raining so i had to hoof it back inside, but i'm gonna go back out later and get this changed out.

The VSS is at the tailshaft of the transmission covered by a cup. The cup is the size of the bottom of a pop can.

Hope that helps.

That cylinder against the firewall is the accumulator for the AC, and in your picture you are pointing to the rear motor mount as your 'target'. The VSS is on the tail end of the transmission under the 'cup' as described above. From what I have gathered if the tranny is still in the car you must drop the Y-pipe to change it.

You can get a better visual by removing the passenger wheel and looking through the wheel well, it will be in the vicinity of where the axle attaches to the transmission (I think just above). Following the speedo cable will also help you track it down. I did myself a favor and bought the sensor then gave up trying to install it myself (after it took over an hour just to get the heat sheild off) and took it to an unsuspecting shop that agreed to do it for the 3 hours the book calls for and paid the 150.00 bucks, after they finished a very irritated mechanic asked me to never bring it back IMHO it was the best money spent on a very thankless job. If you do choose to commit to doing it yourself, you will have to remove the y-pipe and feel it out blindly from underneath, detach the speedo cable, and then somehow get a socket in there to remove the hex screw that holds it in place then pry it out. Also unlike previously mentioned the heat sheild is not screwed onto the VSS, it has 2 clips that attach it. Either way good luck and I hope this helps.
