A couple of Park Rangers in Ford Explorers parked at the end of our "test strip" on the dead end Wirtz Dam Road. Lights flashing, they told us that they had a camera on us and we were trespassing on a "private" road. Camera? We all had cameras. We were just taking wildlife pictures. They said they could arrest us for trespassing (except the sign was down so they would be nice and let us go).
We had only run about 6 or 7 "tests" and Tony and Murph were on the return trip test when the Rangers came on the scene. They obviously saw that we were performing said tests after the two supercharged SHOs disappeared into the distance.
They took all of our license plate numbers and provided that the sign indicating the road was private had been repeatedly knocked down or stolen. I have never seen a sign at the entrance to this road other than the brown colored park sign stating only, "Wirtz Dam Rd." We were all released to travel on our way without additional delay.
And we did. Only the general traffic slowed our touring progress. There were still enough swift corners to let us have an enjoyable time. Some of those corners are challenging even at the posted speed.
The time and miles passed quickly as we found ourselves back at the Oasis by 4:30 PM. Even at that time the parking lot was already filled to the unpaved portion of the lot. After telling a few stories, we made our way into the resturant and were seated immediately on the upper deck. The outfield bleachers. Cheap seats. With a great view. And more great memories.
