How much extra do you think it would cost Ford...

To make the ecoboost engines using forged internals?

Would it raise the cost of the vehicle by more than a grand? I'm kinda doubting that it would.

Now they're talking about upping the output to 400HP or more, seems like they aughta consider it, anyway.

For them to use forged pistons, you'd be talking less than a hundred bucks I would bet, at most a couple of hundred....and that is at more of a retail level, not at an oem level. One of the main reasons OEM's try to avoid using forged pistons though is that they tend to make more noise, especially when cold.....customers don't perceive that well so.....cast pistons for all

I was thinking it might be more important for crank and rods to be forged. No extra noise there...hypereutectic pistons would be fine.

According to the Ford powertrain engineers on hand at the convention lunch at Ford HQ, the current 3.5L Ecoboost V6 has been tested reliably at well over 500ft. lbs. without issue.

The transaxle would have to come a long, long way before there would be a need to bolster the internals to hold up to power levels in excess of 500 ft. lbs.

Yea IIRC he said the rods and crank are forged. But dont quote me on that.

I think someone asked them that exact question.

$1000+ extra / car for forged pistons alone, + the "cost" of people complaining about the extra noise. thats my bet.

I thought he said that only the crank was forged. And that they added more copper to the rod composition.

As Hamel stated, they said it was relaible up to 500 lbs/ft, which would be 475-525 HP, depending on tuning, so they should be good for awhile. If gthey ever take it that high. Remember the tranny. Plus with upcoming mileage stds and such........

Costs for forged would be high, with all of the upfront tooling, testing etc.

sho crank is forged, rods appear to be powdered metal, with forged rods to be used in the truck engines

thats what google seams to be telling me at least, search phrases i used were:

ecoboost forged crank
ecoboost powdered rods
ecoboost forged rods

that's cuz it's easier to put beefier stuff in a RWD trans than it is a FWD transaxle...more room and what not...
