You would have to ask the previous owner:) Thats how they were when I got them. It was only on the front wheels, I figured it was from the Carbotech dust.

I honestly don't remember them being like that. Sorry. check your pm's.

He is going to need a chemical dip to be able to save the machined finish. Aircraft stripper will do the job but that is some nasty, nasty stuff.

it sure is, eats right through nitrile gloves.
MR Gasket aerosol gasket remover works too, not nearly as nasty.
I'm doing a set of aluminum wheels for my ranger, same machined and coated style, same crunchy corrosion issues.

Well I can't believe it's been a year since I bought these rims. I have been just using them as is with the cosmetic issue but have decided to either have them refinished or do it myself. Has anyone had good luck with using Plasti Dip on rims? I want to put these either on my silver 95 MTX or white 91 Plus and was thinking of painting them black. The other option is to keep the same color but leaning towards black.

Plastidip doesn't look as good as paint and it's definitely not a permanent thing, but it's great for seeing if you like the look before you commit to powdercoating or painting. A lot of people seem to hate on it though...

My friend plastidipped the wheels on his 328i. When he sold it, the plastidip had been on for months and it still looked great. He had been commuting to school 40mi or so round trip a day and he didn't have any paint chips or anything. My brother and I have had multiple other things on our car's plastidipped for months and it all still looks great.
