I have a 94 3.0 MTX. I have had the car about a month and until now it has always ran great. The car is my Daily driver and most days never gets past 4k but today I was late for the Thanksgiving festivities and my little boy was crying for me to get there so I gave the sho a little run for its money.

I was running along about 35 mph following this slow poke started to pass him dropped it down in 2nd and floored it. Did great till i passed 6k on the tach. Then started cutting out. I backed off the car and on my next take off I tried to tach it up again. strong pull all the way to about 5500 or 6000 and started cutting out again.

As long as your driving the car like a grandpa it has no problem at all. As soon as you go for the red line it starts cutting out.

Any ideals? where should I start?

Thanks guys!!

You could pull the codes. Even if the light is not on there could be some stored. Do you know any maintinace history on the vehicle?

It's ignition related IMO. You'd notice fuel issues well before 6000 RPM. DIS module or cam or crank sensor if nothing mechanical is present.

I was thinking ignition as well. If all the plug wells are dry then move on to plugs/wires, camshaft position sensor, coil or DIS module.

The only history I know is the front 60 was just done including the crank
Possision sensor. Ill pull a
Plug and check for oil.

Before pulling a plug, first pull each plug wire off and check for oil or water or a mix collecting in the plug well. The rear cylinders are most susceptible to this. You may need new ignition wires. Clean out the plug wells with compressed air (canned air will do) before removing plugs so debris does not fall into the cylinder.

It probably won't be the plugs and wires but the components that tell them when to fire. The cam and crank sensors show the positions relative to when to fire the plugs and also when the fuel injectors operate as well. And all of that is fed into the ECU which goes to DIS module which controls the coil pack and the fuel injectors. If any of those components are out of whack then obviously you'll see issues crop up. I'm thinking one of these is reacting to the engine heat or a ground wire issue under severe duty conditions. And in the case of the DIS module, there should be a thermal grease barrier in between it and the intake to prevent heat related issues.

Update!!!

Pulled the plug wires off today and the plug wells were setting full of oil. Cleaned them out and the ends of the plug wires and problem solved! I drove the car till it was warmed up just to make sure. Pulls hard all the way to the red line!!

Thanks everyone! Thats why sho forum is so great, you guys make it awesome!

P.S. SHOCH that did work great, would have never thought of that at all!

Glad it was an easy thing to find. The oil is a sign that your plugwell seals are leaking. They are fairly easy to change. While you re end there you can chech the valve lash and clean up the intake since its off already.

Well I thought I had it fixed... tried to drive it to town a little while ago and almost couldn't get turned around and back in the drive way. Its missing and cutting out at all rpm now. It wont hardly accelerate at all.

I had a spare dis so I tried it and the problem still exist. The plug wires look like the factory ford motorcraft so I may change them and the plugs next. Then I guess start replacing other ignition parts.
