Hello, I finally after years of wanting an SHO. I picked up an 89 in beautiful cond. with only 92k miles. So I get her home and go out to start it up, nothing, I freak out as it just cranks and cranks.

The power steering pump makes a chattering noise, and makes a whining noise when it is being turned, it even stopped the accessory belt if turned too much. I also notice quite a bit of ps fluid comming out the top, so I had it flushed and it seems to be working now but still has a small leak which I think is causing the cps to fail. Now is my ps pump screwed? Or what else could be the possible? Gaskets? Pulley? I am getting frusterated as I have already ordered many replacement parts for the 60k serivce and a ps pump would really set me back.

Any help would really be appreciated!

Kyle,

Welcome to the Forum! Congratulations on your purchase and on your enthusiasm to invest in the care and feeding of your new car!

First of all, leaking from the PS pump cannot get to the CPS. Just isn't possible. It might be that the PS pump has problems, but there are a few things to check before reaching that conclusion.

First, of course, is to get the engine started. That will involve checking for the three important requirements:

1) Fuel: does the fuel pump run for a second or so when you first turn the Key to ON? Check the pressure at the fuel rail check valve (Guage - $40 at AutoZone -US),

2) Spark: check for spark. I like to clip my timing light onto the #6 plug wire and see if it flashes while cranking. You can also use that wire to check to see if the spark is properly timed, and

3) Air: Inspect the throttle place to be sure it is properly closed when the throttle is released. For starting, it is normally closed and a small amount of air is admitted to the intake via the IAB valve. Try pressing the the throttle partly (1/4) and see if it fires. If it doesn't, try pressing and holding the throttle all the way to the floor and try again.

Once the problem system is identified, we can help you locate the cause of the problem.
