only reaches a medium volume level in my opinion. I thought the unit might be messed up. I found one exactly like it on ebay (89 model). Well it was finally delivered, but it sounds identical.
My question is do I have a problem with my factory amps, or something,
OR does anyone else know if this particular radio/ cASS. is junk. The volume adjuster is like a toggle switch?, you push up on it or push down on it to reach the desired sound level. Other than the volume not being able to reach a loud level, everything else is fine.
The only other thing I can see is it at one time had a factory cd changer. There is another wire harness behind the dash.
Anybody have any input?
By the way, I will sell one of the units if any one is interested.

The decks in the premium sound system are low level.

If I turn the amps off in my car (pull the fuse) no sound at all.

but if I bypass them, I get very low sound.

perhaps your amps are bypassed?

How would I turn off the factory amp vs. bypassing it? I agree with what you are saying... but not sure how to properly diagnose... I was wondering if the speakers are being powered solely by the radio unit itself.

The only way to see if your speakers are being operated by the radio, is to see if the amps are there. The amps are located in the trunk up against the back wall. If no amps are there your better off getting a aftermarket deck.

I pulled the wirng harness out of the amp and it did what shotime described... No sound. Is there any way to increase the output level of the amp?
Next to the amp in the trunk is another amp... I guess. It looks similar to the amp, but I don't believe I see any speaker wires(harnessed) going to it.Does anyone know what that is?
The weird thing about my problem with the volume level is this: if I play the radio, it will max. out at a med. level. But a couple of tapes I have will play quite a bit louder, and other tapes I have, I can barely hear. (all these tapes were copied off the same stereo).
Any ideas?

According to the owners manual, one amp is 85watts for the subwoofers and the other is a 60 watt 4 chanel amp.

Does anyone have the wiring diagram? for the harness that clips into back of factory unit. (What color wire runs where)
That might help me in solving my problem.
I called Circuit City and they said they do not mess with factory units. All I want is a diagnosis... if it were an amp problem I would consider buying an amp... etc...
Some people are so lazy it is pathetic... especially when turning down easy $!!!

Well, I apologize. I took my car to Circuit City and they took the time to talk with me and look at my problem. Unfortunately, no good news. I either need to find me a good factory amp, or put in an aftermarket head unit (and bypass my amp).
