We just fixed a problem like this, on one of our AZ SHO Club rides, a beauty of a red 91 Plus. It was strange though because the clicking that was heard came from the solenoid on the drivers side fender, and the solenoid had BOTH of the heavy guage cables on the same side of the solenoid and a little 12 guage on the other side. WTH!?!?
After a quick look see under the car we found the cause. They had replaced the starter at some time in the past with a gen 2 starter that has its own solenoid. So the ingenious (previous) mechanic said to himself, "self, no problem. I'll just use the solenoid on the fender as a splice point for the heavy cables by putting both of them under one bolt. Then I'll use that solenoid's action to fire 12 volts down to the new solenoid on the gen 2 starter that I got from FatButt Auto Supply and we'll be good to go".
I had the owner turn the key to the start position, we heard the click from the fender solenoid signifying that it had sent 12 volts to the lower solenoid. Using a screwdriver handle, I then tapped the lower solenoid on the starter, and Voila', the starter turned and the engine fired right up.
I sent the owner to the closest auto parts store to get a re-built gen 1 starter, I separated the two heavy guage cables, one to each side of the fender mounted solenoid, and removed the little 12 guage jumper Bufford had put on and we were back in business.
Another SHO mystery solved without blaming it on the crank position sensor.
