I have a 92 MTX, and I'm having a problem with it. When I turn on the key I get all the indicator lights, but when I go to start it; nothing!!!! I get one click and then nothing. I do however have a steady clicking sound around the front middle of the car. I just replaced the starter, but that didnt fix it. I did notice that once the clicking starts, my rpm gauge raises up to the 2 and higher. Does anyone have any idea of what this might be. I need to get this running ASAP.

Check all your cables that go to the starter and on the battery as well.... and if all are well.. look into a new battery.

I dont think that its the battery. Its fairly new. But if all else fails then thats where I will go. I'm getting power, but it goes when I turn the key to the start position.

if its clicking its either the starter or the battery, but cleaning the wires going to the starter will probably help and may be the problem. Charge the battery over night or something to guarantee its got a good charge and give it a shot then.

Thanks everyone, I'll do that. I have to get a charger though. If anyone has any other ideas please let me know. I'll be back on tomorrow to update.

Have you had the intake off? The grounding strap on the pasenger rear side may be off, broken, or otherwise messed up... Same issues with mine when I forgot to reinstall one time.

I had almost the exact problem on my 92 mtx and it was the starter relay. Its a little black box near the firewall. I didnt feel like putting a new one in so I just put a push button starter in but a new relay would work just as well. So I guess what im trying to say is check your starter relay:biggrin:

We just fixed a problem like this, on one of our AZ SHO Club rides, a beauty of a red 91 Plus. It was strange though because the clicking that was heard came from the solenoid on the drivers side fender, and the solenoid had BOTH of the heavy guage cables on the same side of the solenoid and a little 12 guage on the other side. WTH!?!?

After a quick look see under the car we found the cause. They had replaced the starter at some time in the past with a gen 2 starter that has its own solenoid. So the ingenious (previous) mechanic said to himself, "self, no problem. I'll just use the solenoid on the fender as a splice point for the heavy cables by putting both of them under one bolt. Then I'll use that solenoid's action to fire 12 volts down to the new solenoid on the gen 2 starter that I got from FatButt Auto Supply and we'll be good to go".

I had the owner turn the key to the start position, we heard the click from the fender solenoid signifying that it had sent 12 volts to the lower solenoid. Using a screwdriver handle, I then tapped the lower solenoid on the starter, and Voila', the starter turned and the engine fired right up.

I sent the owner to the closest auto parts store to get a re-built gen 1 starter, I separated the two heavy guage cables, one to each side of the fender mounted solenoid, and removed the little 12 guage jumper Bufford had put on and we were back in business.

Another SHO mystery solved without blaming it on the crank position sensor.

Thank you to all. Everyone who said check the battery was right. Now the only problem I have is getting it to start, it turns over fine, but no fire. I have checked all the connections and they are tight and correct. I just dont get why it wont start. I've never had a problem with this car starting .

LOL I feel like that was aimed at me.

No, not at all. I see a lot of people blame ignition problems on the cranking system and cranking problems on the ignition system. They don't understand that those two systems are almost completely separate. No malice intended at all on my part.

It was the battery after all. But now I have a stalling issue. The car runs fine, but when its cold and I come to a stop it stalls out and is hard to get started again.

ANY IDEAS?????????????

If your alternator is not charging the battery then the ignition system is running off of the battery alone, when the battery runs down then your car will die. if it cranks after it dies though, that means the battery is not dead.

Ok. I read somewhere about the IAC and also the MAF sensors. Where are the locations for these? I know that the MAF is by the air box, is the sensor inside? I'm not to good at the mechanics stuff. I can find my way around if I have an idea of where to look.

Umm, wouldnt the next course of action be to find out why the battery died?
I meen isnt that obvious? Have your alternator tested!
