I bought a M7-1 helicoil kit and I read while searching I needed to remove the guide caps. The little rings that go over the hole where the cam cap bolts go through.

I tried to remove it with needle nose vise grips but there is just not enough material there to grab it and yank it up. Can I do this without removing them? My drill bit fits through it but the tapping tool does not.

I practiced removing the "guide caps" on a old motor I had laying around and I could not remove them without damaging them. So my 3 questions are.

1. How do you remove them without damaging them?
2. If I do damage them is there a way to get new caps?
3. Can I not use caps?

Those are locating dowels... I would NOT remove them (MOST CERTAINLY DO NOT LEAVE THEM OUT OR DAMAGE THEM). You should be able to drill and tap with them in place.

Personally, I would take it to a machine shop and also have studs fitted.

The tap does not fit through the dowel. Now I know do not remove them. Now where can I get new ones or how can I remove these safely. I used a pair of vise grips on to get the ones out of a old motor but it bent them up in the process. Is there a tool I can use to get them out?

After removing them this is what they looked like. Maybe I could bend them back into shape?

You aren't going to be bending that back into the right shape. Don't get frustrated and try on your good motor.

I wish I could remember how I did mine years ago, but I don't.

I do remember removing those so the tap would fit.
