I'm replacing one of the rubber hose portions of the metal heater hose going from the engine to the heater core. The part I'm replacing is from the block to the metal portion of the line. I've sawed off the bad rubber hose BEFORE the thick metal ring. When doing a search, I've heard you cut the rubber hose before the ring; I've heard you cut the ring itself, etc. Where do I cut so I can fit a new rubber hose on? It looks like under the crimp ring the smaller metal pipe runs through it. I think I can do like I did, cut before you get to the ring, then pull off the old hose remains which butt up to the ring itself. It's hard to explain.

Confused here. I can post a pic later if need be. I'm guessing it's a 5/8" hose. Another thread on here has the part # I can go by.

Slice through the cripmped metal and remove it. The metal tube is barbed at the end, slip your new heater hose on that, and use a regular clamp. 5/8 is the correct size.

Is it the short piece near the oil pressure sensor that you're replacing? If it is, you need a reducing hose. One end is 3/4", the other is 5/8". Rockauto carries them.

It's at the engine side, so it's the 5/8" one. That metal crimp is about 2" long and is flared on either end. Just wasn't sure if I needed to cut into that and where. I think I can figure it out based on what Bob said. If not, I'll post a pic later when I get home.

This appears to be the correct hose http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/GAT0/18080.oap?year=1989&make=Ford&model=Taurus&vi=1138508&ck=Search_heater+hose_02716_1138508_1696&keyword=heater+hose&pt=02716&ppt=C2091

As Bob said, you need to slit that silver colored crimp lengthwise, using a Dremel tool or something like it to cut the metal. Then it's easy to pry the crimp off and remove the rubber underneath it.

Use one of these to transition from pipe to the engine block:

I cut the crimp off behind the silver part and slipped the 5/8 end into the connector in the block and the 3/4 end where I cut the pipe; seems to fit ok, but I need a 2nd clamp for the 3/4 end. I only had one clamp and put it on the 5/8 side and I seem to have a leak. Not a big deal.

IIRC, the connector on the block is larger diameter than the pipe and should get the 3/4" end. The 5/8" end goes over the pipe. You shouldn't cut the pipe behind the crimp because then you loose the bead formed in the pipe that helps retain the hose. But since you did, no worries, providing plenty of overlap and double clamping it should be sufficient.

Yeah, initially I cut THROUGH the crimp but then saw that the smaller end of the hose would not go over it, so I cut just behind it. Yes, my mistake, the larger end of the hose fit perfectly over the engine block part, and the smaller portion fit over the tube just as it curved into what used to be where the crimp was. I do need a 2nd clamp over the smaller end as I noticed it was leaking when I tried to start the car last night. I only had 1 extra clamp left (went on the larger end to the block), so I'll go pick up another one tonight. Hopefully it holds well enough and will do the trick. If not, I'll source a used/j/y hose.
