Problem:

So I did a search here but the results weren't very helpful (only a non-PP PTU thread came up). I watched two YouTube videos where the mechanics attached a length of 5/16" hose to extend the factory PTU vent-hose in the engine-bay, to enable filling through the vent-port as an easier way to fill the PTU. I have the hose, barbs, etc.

However, with the car either up on ramps, or looking from above the engine-bay with engine cover and intake off, I cannot find the relief-tube. I do have a manual pump. Can I just add fluid from the lower drain-plug (since clearing the actual fill-port is next to impossible due to clearance)? This is a PP, so the PTU has a drain-plug; however, since it's near the bottom of the unit, doesn't that prevent you from completely filling up the PTU?

Backstory:

I believe I am the third owner (formally a lease) with 17,698 miles now on the odometer. The car once lived in Chicago, and then moved to Arizona (where it shipped from), so the car has seen extreme temperatures, both hot and cold. I'm in Los Angeles and have only put about 1,000 miles on the vehicle since buying it in early 2023 (a portion of those miles in hot-idle in stop-and-go, heavy L.A. freeway traffic).

We're about to embark on a road trip through the California and Arizona desert, so the vehicle will be subject to lots of heat as we enter June. I thought it prudent to change the PTU fluid before the trip. (I changed engine oil soon after purchase in mid-2023, and just yesterday, with Mobil 1 5W30 Extended Performance, SN-plus rated).

So with just under 18K miles, on a PP-equipped vehicle which presumably has the PTU with a built-in oil-cooler, I may just go on the trip unabated and resolve this when we return.

I would not be concerned about the PTU fluid at 18k miles. I changed mine when I bought it with 55k miles and it was thin, but not yet paste. Enjoy your trip.

Agreed, I'd change it at 25 or 30k.

While you can fill it through the drain, you'll really have no idea how much oil is in the PTU.

The top of the vent hose is near the transmission end of the rear cylinder head. About a 1 inch diameter black vent cap.

Thanks! Yeah, I looked and looked and looked—I simply couldn't spot it! I was looking for a hose going "nowhere" with the plastic vent-cap as you pictured. Can't see how I could miss a 1" vent-cap like that. I have the original window-sticker and it says "Performance Package" so I'm pretty sure I have the PP PTU; could it possibly be a mid-year parts change?

Also, if anyone can post a photo of where the vent-hose originates from the PTU so I can trace it back up, I would greatly appreciate it; though, you probably can't even see it from under the car—I looked from under the car and couldn't see anything down there next to the PTU—it's sooo tight!

Anyway, thanks to you both for assuring I'm well within spec for the amount of miles on the vehicle. I can proceed on my trip without worry now.

There are two different designs of vent hose. First design had a bobble vent cap like you see on rear axles. Later design has the black vent cap which actually prevents moisture from entering the PTU from the atmosphere. If you separate the black cap from the vent you'll see a white membrane which only allows air to pass thru. The change in design happened 2012-2014, I don't know for sure.

The vent hose attaches at the fitting circled in the picture. If you have skinny arms you can reach and touch it.

The circled clip attaches to the end of the cylinder head.

Wow! Thanks for that detailed reply and taking the trouble to post the images! So if I'm interpreting your image correctly, the vent-hose connects at the "top" of the PTU (facing the sky), so is likely completely out of view if viewed from beneath the car?
