No grinding, no noises, I just cannot get the gear selector FULLY seated into gear. Sometimes 2nd, 3rd, and even 5th. Yet always happens to 4th. Grrrr. This just started today!

I have an OEM clutch/PP/TOB that the first owner put in at 133k and I'm now at 197k with a Jose SHOrt shifter. I think I'm still on the original cable and quadrant. The clutch pedal will not click when I pull up on it.

I've also have a rattle from 2k - 3k revs on acceleration which I assumed was the TOB hitting the PP fingers. So I knew a clutch job was coming.

I have a Quaife sitting here waiting for me to install once I order a new clutch kit. My MTX has shifted fine since I bought it 14k miles ago so I did not attempt to find any used synchros or blocking rings when I pull it apart.

The MTX shifts fine when the car is off. Should I begin the search for synchros? Or am I correct in my assumption that this is a clutch issue?

Thanks All.

Hmmm, fluid is full but don't have a clue what it is. I wont bother changing it with my clutch job coming up.

One question I've got. If I have a bad synchro would it lock me out of gear or just grind on shifts?

Just wondering if I should spend the time/money hunting down parts for when I pull the trans apart for the quaife install.

Thanks All.

Well the trans shifts absolutely great with the car off regardless if the clutch is in or out. Just glides right into ever gear.

But when running I Noticed today that when I can't get it in 4th I get locked out of any gear unless I let up on the clutch in nuetral and try again for shiftage.

Its pretty nasty sounding but when this happens and I let up the clutch and push it back down I get a nasty clunking noise from what I'm assuming is the clutch assembly. Sounds like its sticking and not fully disengaging, but why sticking on 4th.

Ohh well, new clutch cable, TOB, PP, clutch disc, quaife, and M1 ATF should help fix it.

Being that you can get into all gears very easy with the motor off, I point to clutch related issue. If the clutch does not fully disengage from the flywheel, it will cause the transmission to bind up during shifts. If the imput shaft is still turning while you are making a shift, that is where your problem lies.

The only other thing, is that I know nothing about the SHOrt shifter. If there are adjustments in it, you may just want to double check things there. FWIW most aftermarket shifters have bolts inside the shifter gate that allows you to custom taylor how far a shift throw will travel. Making you have the ability to make a shift as short as possible, yet making sure you are in the gear all of the way. You may just want to double check all adjustments.
