Guys Need Help, Dont have 1st, 3rd and 5th gear.

I will start with last night. I am coming home from the mall. I have to stop at a stop light. I am thinking to myself I am gonna open this car up (I baby this car, I dont run it hard what so ever). So I start out in first. Shift into 2nd at around 3k. THen I run 2nd up to 7k, shift into 3rd, then I felt like a pop. I didnt really hear anything. (Very hard to explain). Then I run third up to like 4k and then shit into 5th. COme to a stop sign, downshift into 1st didnt go into 1st as easy as it used to.

Now today I have to go work at another store. So I leave, so I am driving and I reach a stop sign. Downshift into first, I kinda have to find it. So that keeps on happening at every stop light. Also it is doing the same for 2nd to third. So I am 15 mins into my driving, and I need to downshift into 1st, but I cant, it is literally not there, so I like what the ****. I pull out into 2nd go to shift into 3rd and I cant find that either.

Coming home I only have 2nd and 4th gear. I try 5th but same thing, there is nothing there.

Basically the 1st 3rd and 5th detereorated today.

The rod shifter is very very sloppy.

SO what do you guys think, I am thinking I broke something off my rod shifter, but could it be tranny or clutch?

I forgot to add.

This happens while the car is on or off. Shifting into 3rd or 1st feels just like shifting into neutral. Do I need to do under the car to look at the rod shifter?

Shifting into 2nd and 4th, it shifts like it should.

definately your shifter boss though... aka the support rod that connects to your tranny has probably broken off... hopefully at the rod... but if its at the tranny JOSE has a fix for it

if it isnt broken off... it is possible that the bolt unthreaded... but it sounds like youwere driving it hard... so it sounds like something broke...

Like Kurt(NWGRN) said-check tranny boss. If OK pull the rod shifter out & inside the black plastic box at rear there is stamped metal bracket that has the ball socket in it. That brkt is swedged on to the shift tube & peened in 3 places. That brkt is cracked/broken or the brkt swivels on the shift tube. Get it welded up. After my son broke that brkt off on the 90 I pulled apart a spare rodshifter I have to inspect that & found that the brkt was a little loose & would rotate. Now the 90's rodshifter is solid,no slop at all & will have to re-learn shifting it. I like my cable shifter in the 89 better,do not have to be so accurate!

And if that boss DID break, check your motor mounts. Loose/broken motor mounts + slam ******** 5th (sorry had to), might have been the cause of the broken boss.

I can shed some light on the subject for all of you, and Brad. Your Rod shifter is very sloppy because there is supposed to be a plastic washer/spacer that goes over the "active" shift rod, not the stabilizer rod. This is the washer that goes over the rod, and is in the front of the plastic box and has 2 bolts that hold it in. This is also where the rubber dust boot cover's the washer and the end of the plastic box where it meets the shift handle.

The washer was completely gone!!! So, to buy Brad some time, I rigged a cut up beer can and zip tied it around the rod to take up the space that was there because the plastic washer was missing! I also found an A/C line O ring that I substituted for the washer. This awesome "rig" was only temporary, and actually worked quite good, at least for a while.

The correct way to fix it is to find yourself another rod shifter, and either swap the parts you need, or the whole shifter.

Brad,that will not help with your issues. The plastic washer & boot are only there to stop dirt&water from entering the ball socket joint in the box & have nothing to do with rod shifter slop. Only loose tranny connections & the ball socket & the brkt to shift tube connections would allow enough slop to not be able to get into certain gears. Unless its in the tranny itself. Pull the rod shifter before the tranny!

Of coarse! Did you read my post 12? Have you got under the car to check anything? AGAIN, check rod shifter to tranny attachments, If OK ,pull rod shifter out & inspect inside black plastic box. Its easy to pull, call me & I'll walk you through it.

Yes I have read your post, but it sucks I am doing it in my driveway, no car lift, nothing. Do I need to take off part of the exhaust? As I see it might hit, if I cant get it out I have to wait till next friday.

Well I couldnt get it out just simply because I dont have room. I tried. Now I lost 2nd and 4th gear. So now I have no gears and another week with out the SHO. Thanks for the help, gonna see if my mechanic isnt a retard this time and see if he can help out.
