Ground cable off neg post hot

Have 1989 SHO noticed that Ground cable off Neg post off battery is super hot to touch is not hot when key is off not hot when key is turn to accessories but as soon as you start cranking car becomes hot. Starter or connections not touching block. Any ideas

So changing the cable will fix it? Why is it that the short ground cable that goes straight from the post to the fender is hot but the heavy cable to the starter is not? Is it the thickness of the cable?

Try cleaning and tightening the end connection. Other wise you may need a new cable or new ends.

Is the starter cranking ok?
It may be a starter issue.

Yep. It has degraded inside the insulation.

It's going to leave you straned with a "no start" pretty soon if not replaced.

I agree and was stranded in the Arizona desert half a day because I waited to change them out.
