I just put a tranny in my 91. The tranny has like 150,000 less miles on it than mine did. I put a new clutch in it also. Now, when shifting from first to second and then to third (aggresively), I grinds those gears, and then it pops into gear. Under normal shifting it does fine. Its no fun to play in anymore. My shifter has a lot of slack in it also when in gear. Is it the tranny or my shifter? By the way, its a rod shifter.

You said that you have put in a new clutch so the clutch is not the problem. Did you replace the throw out bearing? You should have used corect size throw out bearing. If you did, the only explenation is that you have worn out sinhrons in the trany. Excuse my spelling. Try replacing the trany fluid. Guys from Contour organization have switched to Mobil 1 Synthetic and they use bottle of Ford Friction Moolifyer. The Motorcraft part number for the Friction shit is:
C8AZ-19B546-A. I haven't tried this stuff yet but I was told it makes world of diference in their trannys. :D
