It could be the synchros. Does this "winding" noise disappear when you disengage the clutch (press pedal to the floor)? That could be the throwout bearing.Rebuild the tranny and replace the clutch. That'd be what I'd do.

If the throwout bearing is bad, the clutch may not be disengaging completely. That would make it VERY hard to get into first gear when stopped and the others while rolling. To test if the clutch is decoupling, with the engine idling and the shifter in neutral, press the clutch to the floor, wait 5 seconds and try to move the shifter to reverse. If you hear a grinding as your lightly press the shifter against the reverse gate and the grinding does not stop, the clutch is not fully decoupling and the throwout bearing is the likely cause of your shifting problems. That would mean it is time for a new clutch. Your transaxle is probably okay unless you continue to grind the synchros trying to shift before you can get the clutch replaced.

Thanx for the help. Let me elaborate. The Cluch is still good I think. When I push the C pedal to the floor it grinds in 1st 2nd and 3rd.The car does shift in to all gears though. When the car is not moving but engine is running it doesnt grind in any gear. problem is only when car is moving. 4th and 5th are smooth shifts.
I feel plenty of torque in all gears. It just grinds getting into the first 3.
With that said, From your knowledge does it sound like the throwout bearing or the synchros?
Thanx!
