Going standalone. Where do I start?

My engine was pulled and it with all the parts sat outside for about a year collecting rust. I've decided I have to rebuild the motor but also the computer is now trash. I'd like to upgrade to a standalone unit, but I don't know what I can use with this motor that isn't a tweecer. When I go to wire it, should I be able to cut and reuse the factory plugs with whatever I buy for a pcm?

I also recommend a ****. We run our 86 SVO on it and it's unbelievable how much more power you can make vs the stock set-up.

There are a number of posts on alternatives to the Ford system and I think Zaks 10 second 95 Taurus SHO uses one of these alternatives.
