The salvage yard I work for sold a rear bumper for a 94 SHO today and I was the lucky one to clean it up for our customer... and I noticed it looked like 2 bumpers inside eachother. It was a red GL bumper with just a green rear SHO bumper cover on top.
So I went out and checked my car and sure as sh*t... it was a green inner cover and a red outter SHO cover bolted to it.

Anybody know why Ford did that ?!?
Thats alot of un-needed weight!
So if anybody is looking to lose some more weight in their genII... there ya go. :thumb:

Will look on my 94 and see if mine is like that. If so I will be selling a regular Taurus bumper on ebay.

AFAIK, all gen 2's are like that. Not sure about the color mis-matches, but the SLO bumper cover under the SHO bumper cover is standard.

My sho doesn't have a slo bumper underneath it. I have a 1995.

Look again. The bumper cover simply will not fit or stay in place without it. I figured this out quite some time ago when I had to replace the bumper on my '92. I pulled the SLO bumper off a '92 SHO and did not have to cut any material off.

You'd be hard pressed to save weight by removing it and maintaining the SHO bumper's integrity. You'd have to fabricate something to hold the SHO bumper cover on which probably would not save you any weight in the end.

IIRC, the gen I's may have a SLO bumper too... but I'm not for certain on that. My roommate has a gen I and has had to replace his rear bumper, so I'll ask him later.

On my Gen I. I removed the stock "SHO" rear bumper cover off of mine and replaced it with a "SLO". It makes the car look more "racey" like a NASCAR. The rear end appears highier. With the other bumper it always look like the ass was dragging.

Yea, 1st gens are the same. On mine the SLO bumper was not painted and was missing the chrome strip that was on SLOs at the time.

All right, this one made me look at my Gen 1's.
There is indeed a SLO bumper under the SHO bumper cover.
But the SLO bumper is a one piece assembly that incorporates the side slip mounts as well as the rear mounts to the impact struts.
It is needed to support the thin, flexible SHO cover.
My SLO bumper is unpainted black plastic.

Yeah, I found out about the cover thing when I lifted the rear end of a dead SHO of mine with a bobcat for the **** of it. The back end popped, I set it down, and the cover came off on the right, revealing a black bumper.
