I have a couple questions I guess. First off, I like the styling of my Gen I better than my Gen II, but the coner lights are not pretty. Has anyone modified their corners? If so, do you have any pics? I haven't seen any clear corners for Gen I's, so I'm assuming they don't exist, right?

Also, I want to put in some new door speakers and rear speakers. I did some searching, but couldn't find a real clear answer. For a 91 SHO plus w/ JBL.

Front: 5 1/4???
Rear: 6x8??? or 5x7???

The question is, if I just pull my speakers out, what size will mount in the factory areas without having to pull out the Dremel? I want to order them, but I don't feel like pulling panels off and crap until I have the new ones here and ready to go in.

Dash 3.5"
Front Door 6.5"
Rear Deck 6"x8" or 5"x7"

If you are creative, you can make something on the corners. Forum Member Steevil did some paint work on his. Search CarDomain for member name Steevil, he has pics there. Here as well, but I do not recall where. You could also fab your own out of Sable corners. Justin McCluskey did so on his 91+, as seen here;

Dale, that is certainly strange. I just removed my 3.5" speakers over the weekend to make room for my tweeters to go there. We'll see what kind of imaging I can get with them in that location.

Factory JBL in the Gen 1 only had a 4-speaker (plus sub in some cases) setup. Two in the front doors, and two in the rear deck.

The factory "premium" sound package had 6 speakers, which included two in the said dash locations.

im not the only one though. HyperMikeD!, the former owner of the notorious Texas FREAKSHO, was peeved when he found no speaker cutouts under his dash grilles too.

My January 1991 SHO with the JBL system has 6.5" round coax speakers in the front doors, none in the dash and two 6x9" subwoofers with two 6x8" coax speakers in the rear deck. The rear deck speakers have the subwoofers mounted flush with the deck and the coax mounted on a ****** above them.

I removed the rubber bunge cord suspenders from the subwoofers and replaced them with real bolts to securely fasten the subwoofers to the metal deck. The bass response increased dramatically.

I replaced the original 6x8" dual cone speakers in the rear deck with Pyle Driver 6x8" coax that I bought many years ago. The front door coax and rear deck subwoofers are originals.

Ha ha... Brian, I knew you couldn't stand that crappy factory system for too long! FWIW, you might not be getting anything out of the factory subs.

Yea Dave, they're weak, but my buddy owns a car audio business, so he hooks me up with some good stuff for cost. I'll probably just switch out the door speakers, rears, and put a couple tweeters in there, then maybe a smaller sub like a 10". And if there are speakers in the dash, I guess I'll have to swap them to. Something to look forward to now that I got a decent job and can blow my wages on my SHO's.

My '89 JBL equipped SHO still had the material intact. Although ti didn't look like it was cut, a firm push on either side sent the cutout portion loose out of the dash. As for the rear speakers, I'm currently running 6x9s with modified brackets. This isn't fun or simple, but it vastly increases your choices and sound quality, IMO. many prefer round speakers as this is alledgely the only way to produce crisp sound. To be completely honest, i've yet to hear the difference between a good round speaker and one that's oval...

Pioneer 3 way 120watts out back (currently held in by zip-ties because i'm "revising" the bracket design for a 2nd time), Infinity tweeters in the dash, 2 polk turd subs in a bandpass box w/ a 750w pioneer amp and a Alpine 9827 head unit.

Now I know this will make people giggle, but those zip ties work absolutely AWESOME! the speakers are held in rigid and a bit of foam on mounting points prevents any type of rattling. However, I wouldn't be able to live with myself leaving them be since the brackets are THAT close to being completed.

Hope my ghetto/make-shift input does something.. even if that somethin is makin you laugh! :nut:

I had a dual 10" kicker setup in the '93 that sounded great. A single would do fine too. Just remember that the 8 ga wire can't support much more than 450-500 watts. But I'm sure your friend told you that.

Send some pics when you've got it all worked out!

I removed the rear factory speaker brackets, and was able to squeeze 6X9's in the rear deck. :thumb:
