I have a '93 sho, and recently I threw the diff pin through the side of the mtx. So, I brought it to the transmission shop, and had them throw a used tranny in it. So far, they have put in 2 used trannies in it, and BOTH of them had what they called "gear slap". It is a very hard knocking sound coming from the transmission when the car is in neutral (esp when stopped). The guy told me that it will not hurt the drivability if I got over that terrible noise. They also told me that I have ~15,000 left on my clutch. Is this noise really "gear slap" or could something else have been damaged when I threw that pin (P.S. I am looking to sell it ASAP so I am looking to put in as little $$ as possible to get it running again)

Never heard of "gear slap" at idle, however you can sometimes hear rollover noise in the MTX as the shafts are spinning. I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be banging, no matter what they say.

*scratches head* uhhhmm...This is new to me. Grab a sound clip or a video please. My car has a lot of odd noises...but nothing from the tranny, and none of them should. Sounds like total B.S. from these guys. I don't trust the whole thing, sounds a little fishy.

The only noise you'll hear from these trannies it seems is the noise of the diff going BOOM.

Get us some sound clips or vids please.

Sounds like clutch chatter to me. Even if they replaced the transmission the clutch would remain untouched, hence the recurring noise.

Could be the TOB walking on the pressure plate fingers. You should of had the clutch changed while they had the tranny out! Even if you aren't going to keep the car I'd be pretty ****** if I bought the car from you and the clutch went out <15K later.

Could be neutral rollover rattle also. This is what it sounds as if they are describing. If it is this it won't cause any damage to the engine or trans.

What clutch disk are ou using? It is possible for an all metal spline in the disk to make a rattle noise as well.

TOB is not to be ruled out as well.
