I know I have seen posts about this before and how to do it, but I cant seem to find what I am looking for...

Well, on my sister's SHO, her fuel gauge stopped working. I believe its the sender (which is in the tank, correct?) How would I know for sure its the sender and not the gauge besides letting the low fuel light come on if the sender is working?

There used to be a procedure where you could replace the sender by cutting a hole under your back seat instead of dropping the tank from under the car. Would this be good to do and if so does anyone happen to have the diemensions/directions on where to cut the hole?

TIA. pizza

Need the year, don't know if they are all the same. The sender is a real simply device, not much to go wrong with it. Maybe the wiring too. There is also a "slosh module" inthe dash. It stabilizes the senders output so it doesn't flip all over the place around corners and such. I'm looking at a 92 book, does the temp gauge work? they share the same ground. Connector C204 has the return line. It's behind the left cowl panel. Behind the E brake pedal. O/Y should go to ground, it's the return from the sender. C309 is in the same area,,Y/W goes to the sender, O/Y comes from it and should be grounded. You should see continuity between the two, book shows 22.5 ohms empty and 145 full, so anything in between is ok. Then jack up the pass side and see if the reading changes. C309 is the first connector, aside from the one on top of the tank, and has both wires in it. Book doesn't say how much voltage should be on the Y/W wire. Again, this is 92 info. Have fun!

Brandon,

In case you decide to go after your sender, have a look here for my post which provides links to info on how to reach it through the floor of the back seat.

Good luck, and be careful.

the wires from the sender come out passenger side above the tank buy the fuel filter you could get to the wires there and check with a ohm meter. Check it when low on gas, and after filling up. When full should be higher. If it dont change then its the sender. If it does its in the Dashboard

If you do not have access to a service manual go toyour local library. In the reference section you will find automotive service manuals, such as Motors, Mitchels, Haynes, Chiltons, etc. Look up the test proceedures for testing the gauge first. This is the more common failure. The problem is very frequently a connection problem, such as a poor ground connection.

If the gauge tests out properly, then tests the sending unit. This can usually be done without removing the sending unit. If the sending unit fails, then you will have to remove and replace it. rangerj
