i used a flex hone for rotors that i put on the end of a dewalt it can also be used on die grinder i had a old flywheel that was on a shelf for god knows how long and it had some light surface rust on it the hone took it off no problem
i think i might have paid 20 bucks for it highly recomend it, not sure if local parts store would have it i got it from my snap-on dealer

It all depends, some say yes, some say no. If you want to save a few bucks and say screw it then throw it in but be warned it might cause premature clutch failure.

Awhile back I bought a Ford clutch and a resurfaced flywheel from a rahter dependable SHO person. Clutch started slipping before a lot of miles.

I alway get a new flywheel now during a clutch job.

How much material can be removed from the face before its out of spec? I wouldn't imagine it would be much at all. I would say hit it with that hone he was talking about, or a green scotchbrite pad. We used those on a truck once to clean off some light surface rust before... but that was on a F-250 clutch.. :)

X2 Get it resurfaced. Make sure you use a shop that does a lot of them, has a Blanchard flywheel resurfacing machine and knows what they are doing.

Measure the alignment pin height before having it resurfaced. After the pins are reinstalled in the resurfaced flywheel, you may need to grind them down a bit so they are no higher than before. If too high, the pressure plate will not be flush.

X3, there should be a local shop that does a ton of resurfacing work and you should get a decent price vs new flywheel.
