Tonight I felt like opening the ol' SHO up a bit. I took it out on a road I
had never driven before. Turns out it had a 3-4 mile straight-away that was,
for the most part, completely flat. Hmm. I had always wondered how fast I
could get going in 1 mile.
So, I drove up a ways and made sure there weren't any cars coming from either
way. Turned around, came to a complete stop. Looked down at my odometer,
floored it, and I was on my way.
The first block at the most was sloped downhill a little, then the rest was
completely flat. Obviously that helped my acceleration a bit.
As the car shifted into 4th at 115, I kicked myself for not turning O/D off
so I could keep in the upper revs.
Anyway, I had to slow down after going just over 9/10 of a mile.
130 MPH.
I bet if I would have been able to do a full mile and had O/D off I would
just about reach 144.
Anyone else do a test like this in their SHO? Curious as to how fast others
travel in a mile. Thanks!

137 is max in 3rd gear ..... Its hard to say if you could make that 144 mark in one mile.

Have not tried to check the speed at the end of a 1 mile FT run. Pickup is very fast on the upper end though, so it is possible that with the O/D off you can get to max about when you get to the end of the mile.

Be careful out there.

Best I've "not ever done" is 135 with O/D on... You're s'posed to take it off? I've only done it once so I'm hoping I didn't screw up the car too bad... But why do you take it off? I'm curious to know...

I believe Paul Nimz from the V8 list reached 144 in just over a mile. He has alot of modifications under the hood...homemade...but very helpful none the less.

Email the list about it...you'd get a response from him I bet

Wow, who dug up this old thread?

Turning O/D off will make the car stay in 3rd gear longer. Usually if you have O/D on, the car will shift to 4th gear around 115mph. The engine will pull harder in 3rd gear at those speeds.
