I once again failed my emissions test. The paper says I have a higher number of HydroCarbons. My check engine light is on, so I went to autozone and had them pull the codes. One of the codes pulled was that the EGR valve wasn't opening. Would this make the higher HydroCarbons? Any help would be great, thanks guys....

checking the EGR would be a good start. also check all your vacuum lines to insure they are in good condition. id also make sure the purge canister (if you have one) is still a sealed unit.

hc's are useually fuel/spark related. the egr only does what it says it puts already burned air into the combustion chamber to help keep it cool. it reduces the nox. When the egr valve opens it allows dead air into the cylinder that will not burn. check your plugs is the best advice i can give you. it coyuld be a cat failing you. if plugs are ok take it to an exhaust shop and ask them to check the cats usually free-$20

My first guess would be that you have a vacume leak in the tube that goes from the rear exhaust manifold to the EGR valve.

It is easy to check, get a peice of tubing and put one end on your ear, then (with the car running) run the other end of the tube over the tube I mentioned prevouisly. If you can hear a hissing noise that is louder in one place, that is your vacume leak.

Ah Scott,

Read? Learn? Don't you have a magical answer of 25 words or less? :D

I read, and learned, and downloaded into a file labeled emissions. Thanks, rangerj thumbs_u
