Mr. Resourceful
I'm pretty sure my third gear blocking ring took a shit today and I'm hoping you guys could help me understand what exactly went wrong. I'll start from the beginning and hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me can weigh in.
This morning I was working on tuning my maf so I was revving up the engine with the car in the neutral. At one point at about 4500 rpm the engine made this horrible noise like it was knocking out of control and the engine shook like Michael J Fox on cocaine. I checked the datalog and air and fuel were fine, so I cautiously proceeded and it never happened again.
Fast forward to when I'm done and I go to move the car. I go to put it in first, but it felt like 4th gear was about 1/6 engaged, which I've noticed it seems to do on its own sometimes. I thought nothing of it and went forward, then backed up to where I park. I didn't back up far enough, so I went to put it in 4th before shifting into reverse again (so it doesn't grind) and the shifter got stuck about 3/4 of the way engaged. It wouldn't engage further and it would not go out of gear. I shut the car off and clutched in and then it came out of gear no problem. I tried moving it in and out if 3rd and 4th and was sticky until about the fifth time I tried, then it moved normally.
So then I went for a test drive and whenever I go to shift into third, there is no resistance at all, then it makes a grinding sound and goes into gear. 4th doesn't have the issue at all. From what I've read this is a failed blocking ring.
I'm curious to know is what went wrong. How would the transmission being partially engaged in 4th damage the 3rd gear blocking ring? And why would it slip into 4th like that when it was neutral? And most importantly, how should I it drive now? Double clutch?
EDIT:
Now it's stuck in 4th again. I pulled into the same spot it had the issue the first time, went to back up and it locked. Guess I shouldn't park there anymore :shakehead
Anyone have any idea how to get it out of 4th?
EDIT Again:
Got it out of 4th! Just had to start off in 4th and it came out once I started moving
