Error Codes Pulled - now where to begin?

I purchased this car last Monday (1/10/05) w/about 58,000 miles. Why I didn't get the codes pulled before the purchase is beyond me. Actually, I didn't even think about it to be honest. No CheckEngine Light. No Problems. Right?

So my wife tells me the Check Engine light flickered on/off. I asked her to run it up to get the codes pulled while I was at work, and I'd look into them later (with the help of my new buddies here for further details. Here's the codes I'm pulling and what I've discovered they are. The CE light has not flickered since -- only that one day.

177 - Oxygen Sensor
This seems to be pretty straight forward to replace. Tricky reach, but do-able. Does a 177 mean I should do both of them?

528 - Clutch
I wouldn't have a clue where to begin.

542 - Fuel Pump
I seen the "DIY - Fuel Pump Replacement thread" - Could be a pain, especially lowering my gas tank.

565 - Canister Purge Solenoid Failure
I can't find anything on this. Any suggestions or feedback what/where to look?

First step is to search for those codes on the forum here and read up on them. I'll do a little research to help you out.

About dropping the fuel tank, you can make an access door by following the guide on my website (link in sig) in the Maintenance section. Thank Beth for it

The only one I couldn't really find info on was the 565 - Canister Purge Solenoid Failure.

I think the clutch is simply outta my league. I don't have a lot of experience and would hate to attempt a fix and make it worse. I know many here are mechanics and weekend wrench warriors, but I'm a real newb to most of this.

- Heck - you shoulda seen how excited I was when I dropped a K&N in my other car. I thought I was the $hi7. Then, to flex my new mechanic skills, I even deleted the air-silencer while I was in there!

The 528 code is a clutch switch circuit failure (A/C clutch?). If the A/C was not on this code is not meaningful and can be ignored.

Doesn't the 542 code just mean that the car stalled at some point since the codes were last reset? I seem to remember getting this one any number of times and always chalking it up to stalling and not an actual fuel pump failure. I try resetting the codes and see if it reappears before cutting into your trunk.

What in god's name is a 528 code? Found no info - could be a misread number.

The 177 means your running rich. Check the plugs, air filter, MAF and all the other usual crap. If the car only has 58K on it, then chances are the O2's are probably original - I just replaced my factory O2's this summer (used the Bosch - no trouble). Not sure which car you have, but on the MTX it took me about 3.5 minutes to change them both once it was up on stands (get the free autozone loaner wrench). If you replace one, save yourself the hassle and do both.

The 542 means the car stalled. Your fuel pump is fine

Welcome to the forum.

First, you must identify your car by year, and transmission (and engine, if swapped).

Second, pulling the codes is easy. All you need is a paperclip. http://www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html is a good reference.

Make certain that you follow all test prerequisites. Focus on the FIRST code that is output, reset the PCM, then retest. Some codes spawn follow-on codes. Also, the timing of the operator actions during the "goose test" take some practice.

That link you gave has a lot of info. I can just see myself out there with my super-duper forged paperclip ((and I thought I may have to buy tools))

ok here we go full list from the EECIV Manual

177 is a memory code Oxygen sensor not switching system was rich left or front O2s

Replace the O2's

528 another memory code. Voltage at pin 10 (is A/C on) or pin 30 PNP CPP switch. read park nuetarl position Clutch Pedal Position

most likely a switch error.

542 KEOE and Memory code. Fuel pump bad, Bad Ground or Always on.

Replace Fuel Pump

565 KEOE canister purge 1 solinoid/circut failure.

More then likely a bad contact is causing that one.
