just replaced front crankshaft seal & oil pan gasket. now car does not run correctly. upon startup engine idles correctly. then after about 30-45 seconds engine starts to falter. idle jumps from 300-1100 rpm and back continuosly until stalling. also has noticeable back fire at about 22-2300 rpm. to replace oilpan gasket had to remove starter and lower exhaust. crank seal required removal of timing belt and sprocket. installed timing belt per chilton pro shop manual directions. which was also done when i replaced the water pump. but i did not have these problems when i installed the water pump shoot shoot shoot

Double check the DIS module ground on the intake's crossover tube. Are the two bolts torqued down that hold the crossover tube in place? Did you remove the CPS? If so, did you gap it to 0.03"? This wouldn't cause the backfire, but did you reset the idle programming after you first started the engine or did it not run long enough?

like scott said make sure your DIS is grounded, make sure you have installed the belt corectly with corect timing, make sure you have conected the ground line from the engine to the chasis

Did not remove cps. but upon inspection found cam timing to be 180 out of phase with crank. reset timing and car runs better but still hesitates and willnot idle any longer than 1-2 minutes with out stalling but will start right backup. also picked up decoding module and got the codes from the eec. getting a 157,177,211,542. any help locating the source of the codes and specific trouble shooting info would be greatly appreciated.

You have got some problems!

157 (R,M) Mass Air Flow signal is/was low or grounded - MAF

177 (M) Oxygen sensor not switching - system was rich Left or Front HO2S - Fuel control

211 (M) Ignition PIP signal was erratic or missing - Ignition Systems

542 (O,M) Fuel pump open, bad ground or always on - - Power / Fuel Pump Circuits

The oscillating idle is usually indicative of a failed or dirty idle air control valve (IAC), but this usually doesn't **** the engine. I recommend you clear the codes (if you haven't already) by removing the jumper while the codes are being displayed and run the EEC test again.
