Hey SHO guys,
Im new to the SHOscene so hopefully someone will help with my problem. I just picked up my 95 ATX SHO from a family member with 86k on the ticker. It's had the 60k service done but the problem is it stalls in extreme heat situations from living in Las Vegas. I have run the engine code procedure and come up with zero, zilch, notta. I use the car for work and drive 50 to 100 miles a day (cool weather permitting) When it dies it takes 5 to 15 minutes to get restarted and then happens contually till it is cooled off enough to get her home only to roll my sorry a$$ out of the seat to the watering hole. I have disconnected the battery to reset the codes 2 times and still come up with no errors. Some other noticable problems are hard shifting into 2nd after restarting but goes away after 2 or 3 shift cycles, also I think I hear a vacuum leak and noticed today the gas tank or some related component venting out gas vapors after engine shut off infront of the passanger rear tire, Looked like a conduit for a fuel line. I have been doing alot of reading on the sites I have found what I have come up with is a possible Crank shaft position sensor or the MAF mod is bad, any other tips or checks would be much appriciated.

Your best bet would be to first read the trouble codes from the computer There are links in my signature with instructions on how to do this yourself, with something as simple as a paperclip or short piece of wire. The answer may be right there just waiting for you to ask! :D

Let us know what you find and we can advise you from there.

Welcome to the forum! :)

Ford Fuel Pumps like to die when it gets hot out.

My parents' SLO did the same thing on a long trip- the idiot dealers broke the fuel gauge putting it back together..

Check the pressure at the rail next time it gives up. (Use a rag around the valve on top of the intake, push down with a small screwdriver or something. Be careful of fires!! :D )

Usually the CPS would give some sort of code, but not always. If you try cranking it after it dies (before your wait before it will run time is over) and the tach stays at zero, though, it probly is toast.

Using that method only tells if it has any kind of pressure at all. It Dosen't tell how much pressure. It could have lets say 5 psi. The car will not run properly, if at all on 5 psi, so that method of checking won't help. If you want to start checking the fuel pressure go and buy a fuel pressure tester for approx $30.00 and check it. If that is ok I would be replacing the CPS. While you're at it might as well and do the timing belt, accessory belts ect.....

True, but it was a right-on diagnosis for me. I had turned the car on and after a second of squirt nothing else was coming out of the valve. Fuel pump was toast.

As far as I know they either pump, or don't? not partially?

I know I could be very wrong on this assumption..

Fuel pump issues are near and dear to my heart...

I've now replaced 2 of them in my 89

They can run for an hour or more on the freeway if there isn't much variation in load, as soon as you stop or punch the gas it can fail. They are basically a electric motor and when put under too much load they can stall out (when hot or in big demand periods.

My car would run fine untill it got hot or in stop and go traffic then it would run lean or die. It gave the same symptoms as your car. Check the fuel pressure! Check the fuel pump! It's a bitch to change if the tank is full (trust me, I did it) so run it as dry as you safely can, then its an easy job.

Have fun! Hope that helps!

I've had pumps totally crap the bed and I have had them work, but not to full extent. It totally depends on the pressure, not if some fuel squirts out of the shrader valve.

Update

Thx For the responce guys but check this out, After taking my SHO to a recomended shop they could not make a diagnoses and there for asked me to drive it bring it back when it started to act up. Well I drove it around the corner to my office and wasnt there but maybe 5 minutes when one of my co-workers asked me why a tow truck was towing my car away. I ran out to find a my SHO had been draged 30 feet while in park from the parking space I was in and up on a flat bed. When I confronted the bug eyed smelly and somewhat dim whitted tow truck driver why he was towing my car he said the property managment company reported an abandoned car on there lot. (Has anyone ever abandoned there SHO?) Well I screemed I just parked it 5 minutes ago he said "ok dude you can have your car" as I was looking at the drag marks from my tires I said "What the F*%k!" So now im taking it to the Ford dealer here in Vegas and the towing company and or the property managment company is going to pickup the tab for the damaged caused by the idiot tow truck drive looking for an abandoned Nissan Maxima. I love good luck and will keep those interested in this twisted mishap upto date on what comes out of it.

oh yeah

I have no plates on the SHO cause the Title is being transfered to me but signitures were screwed up so more papers have to be signed and noterized to make it legel, all I have is a sticker in the from window if anybody knows Nevada DMV procedures they issue new plates when title transfers

That sucks. Burning rubber with the engine off! :bonk:

A little more hijacking:

How often is the fuel filter supposed to be replaced?

I'm sure changing it out once in a while would make these stupid pumps last longer.

ps- I changed the pump in Dec. 2003 with 3/4tank of gas. The car had about 155k miles on it...

Wow that sucks about the retard tow truck dude, I woulda beat the crap outa the numskull, but hey, then I prolly couldn't get the towing company to pick up the tap for the repair job lol!

Anyways, AutobahnSHO, you need to change the fuel filter every 10,000 miles, I did mine when I did part of my Top 60K a few weeks ago.
