Engine shuts down after 1-10 miles of driving?

New to the boards here, not new to SHO's. My problem is that after driving for 1-10 miles the engine simply shuts down. (Rather interesting situation when cruising down the highway)

After an hour or two, it'll fire right back up....but then only for a few miles and does this again.

Other than this, the car is running perfectly.

What could be causing this? Thanks in advance for any help.

It could very well be the crank position sensor that is malfunctioning.

This sensor is an important component in the ignition system, and if its not working correctly, you will have a random stall - no start condition, because the engine is intermittently loosing spark. Do a search on CPS or crank position sensor replacement.

I agree. Sounds like CPS symptoms. I would run the codes first.

You can pay someone to do this, or with your own tools and a little time you cn do it yourself. Used above website myself and did it in my garage, though it took a while first time.

You would need the front 60K service for the CPS. Main parts to replace are drive belts, timing belt and front main seal. Cam seals if they are leaking, otherwise can skip (they are a pain). Then the CPS itself.

Hardest parts of this service are loosening the crank bolt, exposing the timing belt (lots of time), getting the various pulleys off (esp. the crank pulley and sometimes the crank sprocket). After that, CPS gets put it behind the crank sprocket, which is part of the timing belt setup.

Getting the timing marks right is not hard. Use the "straw method" to verify TDC.

I had these exact symptoms on a car once years ago, and it turned out to be a really clogged fuel filter. The fuel would bleed through enough while the car was sitting, but after that fuel was used up. it would starve the engine.

I could see this happening, thus why running the codes should precede any repairs. A failing or faulty CPS should leave a code in the computer.

I had this same thing happen, and it did NOT throw codes. The water pump had a slow leak that leaked onto the CPS. Car dies - water dries - car starts. Good luck!
