The only synthetic oil I would recommend NOT using is Mobil 1. BITOG members have found that it runs thin and doesn't hold viscosity very well over time. I just happen to be running M1 when I spun a bearing. My personal take is that it just didn't hold up to the abuse I put it through.

To many variables to consider before making a claim like above

I have been running Mobil 1 since 2002 in all my sho's.

In those days it was American iron only. Nothing broke on that car and I laid down a lot of rubber. Thats the same car Steve Queen used in the movie "bullet" Which was filmed in San Francisco at the same time I lived there.

Spend some time on BITOG and view the UOA's yourself. It's not a great oil and there is better for the money. As always you'll have to make your own decision, but I have made mine. I've got too much wrapped up into my motor to have another failure. I spent a few months researching on that board and even made some posts about other's opinions. (I hear the diesel stuff is decent).

UOA's on the Impreza/STi forums have been great for Rotella T and M1 is not taken very well there.

As have I, but it appears that I am better at doing research. There is a lot to sift through, but there are definitely some complaints on M1 and when it comes to higher performance cars (that are driven as such), you'll very rarely see anyone recommend M1.

My info on Mobil 1 is from people with experience in SCCA, Open Road Racing (where they close of a section of hwy) and circle track racing. Bobby Unser used Amsoil when he was winning Pikes Peak and Indy.

Here is my $0.02 worth...

This is what I am now using in my 1995 SHO.

AMSOil 5w30 with a K&N Oil Filter.

Previously I used Valvoline Dura-Blend (synthetic blend 5w40) with a K&N.

Nothing less than the Valvoline...or the K&N filter... I can extend oil changed a little beyond 3k even with some beating and oil still looks mostly clean.

Be prepared to pay through the nose for AMSoil... Small price for perfect oil.

Need a new trans ATX, anyone want to "donate" ?

Two things you get with Amsoil. Over 300 degrees, no big deal. Film strength: 8 times better then any petroleum. That keeps your Bearing's where they belong.

Clean "looking" oil means nothing ;-) I know it's good oil, however, if you're basing that on your usage, you're doing it wrong.

I run my daily drivers 8k miles before an oil change.

I drop ship Amsoil 5w-30 to people in the US for under 7 bucks (plus tax and what not) but I don't find it more expensive than anything else...

I paid around $9 or so.. a case cost me like $125 or $140 (can't remember exactly) after our nearly 10% tax now...

I have extended to 10k on the Valvoline stuff and it was pretty damn thick come changing time.. way thicker than when I put it in. I only said that as a reference. My oil is usually dark enough were you can't see through it.. once, only once could I see any light through it.. I know it's carbon build-up, but whatever....

I thought about installing a Bypass filter, (you know, one of those TP bypass filters) but don't know where I'd tap into a pressureized line and a return......

Saw a guy go about 12k on his diesel before he changed the oil and the rolls of TP.. sent off for analisys and came back as if he only had under 1k (with the stats for any metal, acid, moisture, blah blah...) I have the pic of the sheet on my Zune...somewhere.. The levels were WAY below what was expected.

By-pass systems are awesome...I'm installing one tomorrow on my Mustang...sure helps to keep things clean...

I've gone decent drain intervals also...with sampling, on my Jeep I'm around 15,000km's...hard km's, still good (Amsoil 10w-30) ...no easy street for that beast and I want about 2000 more km's on my Mustang (street/strip 0w-30) to send that in to the lab...
We were with Royal Purple for a few years until I started testing....tested alot of brands....Amsoil kept coming back best....so now I use it and sell it....it's done well for me at the shop and I imagine it will only do well in my SHO

You must get up awfull early. I have By-pass systems installed on a 68 Buick(orignal never rebuilt engine) and a 90 Chevy pu with over 300K. I don't drive the SHO enought to put one on. Been using Amsoil for 12 years.

'91 SHO, had Castrol GTX 10W-30 since the beginning. Car has 260K mi now, replaced rod bearings @ 215K mi, with little wear (very little copper showing on two upper bearings). Often, I get some special deal on 5 qt Castrol GTX.
Btw, 10W-30 because AZ is HOT...

In Texas the DPS (Texas Highway Patrol) does 25K oil Changes on Amsoil. I have a customer coming up on his forth oil change at 400k. "By-pass Filter".

Tell them about Texas. The city's of Arlington, Bedford, Hondo police department in Texas also use Amsoil. I just signed up our Natural Gas Company.
